General Statement of Duties:
Under the direction of a Shift Supervisor or Resident Counselor, supervises residents in the childcare facility and ensures a safe and secure environment for residents. Activities include processing resident intakes and discharges, supervising daily work and recreational activities, teaching proper hygiene and conduct, monitoring resident behavior, intervening in crisis situations, and documenting incidents and resident interaction.
Supervision Received: Work is performed under the general supervision of the Program Manager, Resident Counselor, Shift Supervisor on duty.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: These examples do not include all of the tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.
· Maintain unit security by monitoring resident’s activities, observing behavior and attitude, conducting regular room and bed checks, intervening in crisis situations in accordance with established policy, reporting unusual behavior and attitude to supervisory and/or casework staff, ensuring that the building is secure, and performing other related functions
· Interact with residents individually and in group settings to discuss personal problems, facility rules and regulations, personal hygiene, conduct, personal and group goals, substance abuse issues, and other relevant issues such as personal budgeting and education needs.
· Process resident intake by conducting personal searches, obtaining and logging personal items and orienting residents to the facility. Logs required resident intake information.
· Verify court orders, return personal belongings, and log required discharge-related information to process resident’s discharges.
· Conduct and supervise resident’s physical education, work, and recreation activities. Accompany and supervise residents on approved field trips.
· Interact with treatment, court, and childcare facility staff to discuss the resident’s behavior and attitude and treatment related issues.
· Perform various food service, building and grounds maintenance and housekeeping tasks such as food preparation, meal service, and cafeteria clean-up, interior and exterior building maintenance, grounds maintenance, and laundry of linens and resident’s clothes.
· Dispense medication to residents in accordance with physician approved prescriptions, logs medication dispensed and ensures that medications are secured. Provides basic first aid as necessary.
· Logs various functions and activities, such as room and bed checks, door checks, contacts with residents, intakes and discharges, contacts with treatment personnel, and other situations involving residents and unusual circumstances.
· Transport residents to court hearings and medical appointments.
· Utilize practical therapeutic interventions and activities such as cognitive behavior therapy, dialectical therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy.
· Manage resident’s level statuses and rewards systems in accordance with each individual’s treatment behavior and progress.
· Create individualized behavior plans with teachers, counselors, therapists, supervisors, and probation officers.
· Organize and update relevant information in regard to a resident’s case file.
· Attend weekly staff meetings to discuss policy changes, information regarding a resident’s behavior, and review projects.
· Inspect facilities to ensure sanitary practices
· Collaborate with outside mental health professionals to ensure treatment work is completed in a timely manner.
· Communicate with IT to ensure all computer and phone systems are working appropriately.
· Communicate with law enforcement and courts about potential intakes.
· Communicate with health professionals to ensure appropriate health and wellness practices are being followed.
· Communicate with general public about the services provided and the resources available to meet their needs.
· Perform related work as required.
Desirable Education, Experience and/or Qualifications: An employee in this class, upon appointment should have the equivalent of the following training, qualifications and/or experience.
· High school diploma or GED
· A bachelor’s degree in social sciences or human resources field is desirable.
· No specific amount of prior experience is required.
· Meet all state requirements.
· Pass a criminal background check.
· Pass a background check through the Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry.
· Valid driver’s license.
· Basic knowledge of first aid and CPR training must be obtained withing six (6) months from the date of employment.
· Reasonable knowledge of MSC standards and procedures
· Knowledge of resident’s needs, habits, and characteristics of behavior.
· Knowledge of human behavior in the social environment
· Knowledge of general office procedure and protocols.
· Skill in verbal de-escalation
· Ability to serve as a substitute parent to children

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities:
· Work is primarily indoors and request sitting for extended periods.
· Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds without a gait belt.
· Must be able to carry an average weight of one (1) to ten (10) pounds, several times a day up to 400 feet.
· Must be able to push or pull an average weight of 10 to 250 pounds for a distance of 10 to 400 feet on carpet or tile.
· Must be able to stand on carpet or tile 75% of the day.
· Must be able to walk on carpet or tile up to 75% of the day up to 10 to 400 feet, at a time and go up and down stairs.
· Must be able to reach, bend, squat, and kneel several times an hour.
· Must be able to hear and speak over the phone and in one-on-one communication needs
· Must be able to maintain a work pace of steady to fast paced at times, multi-task several times a day.
· Ability to see and hear information and meet the needs of the resident’s environment.
· Must be able to walk 400 feet up and down hallways to do a visual check of each room every 15 minutes or more in an eight-hour shift without assistance.
· Must be physically fit enough to physically take control of a hostile situation such as a physical altercation, AWOL, assault, self-harm or suicide, or riot situation. Staff must be able to restrain or help restrain in an extreme situation to prevent any harm to youth or staff in any building.
· In any weather situation the ability to be outside with residents standing on concrete for up to two (2) hours.
· Must be physically able to stand on tile floors for up to two (2) hours and complete the following daily chores such as showers, kitchen chores, back hall chores, and day-to-day cleaning.
· Must be able to stand outside on concrete with resident’s for up to two (2) hours.
