Job Title: Youth Career Program Coordinator

Position Overview
The Youth Career Program Coordinator will oversee the delivery and development of programs designed to prepare young adults aged 16-24 in Newport News, VA for career success. Using established curricula from ACT and other tools from the City of Newport News’s Youth Career Program (YCP) readiness and placement initiative, the Coordinator will manage program execution while also refining and updating materials as necessary.
This role emphasizes community collaboration. The Coordinator will work closely with staff, business leaders, community organizations, and educational institutions to connect youth to meaningful career exploration opportunities. Responsibilities include mentoring staff and, students, interns, maintaining records, and ensuring program goals and deliverables are met efficiently.
This position is ideal for an organized professional with experience in workforce development, case management, and leadership, especially as they relate to youth and community engagement.
Responsibilities
- Leadership and Supervision:
- Provide guidance and training for program staff, youth interns, and apprentices.
- Coordinate and supervise daily activities across all youth teams and staff.
- Program Management:
- Develop detailed schedules and timelines for program activities.
- Track and document program sessions through sign-in sheets, detailed notes, photos, and other appropriate methods.
- Conduct evaluations of staff, interns, apprentices, and job placements.
- Monitor program performance and prepare detailed reports for funding agencies.
- Community and Employer Engagement:
- Conduct outreach to recruit youth participants and local employers for the program.
- Expand and maintain strong collaborative relationships with schools, organizations, and community partners.
- Serve as a liaison between program staff and Youth Career Program (YCP) management.
- Professional Development:
- Foster a positive and professional work environment for youth participants and staff, leading by example and promoting high standards of conduct.
Qualifications
- Essential Skills Bachelor’s Degree preferred:
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint) and social media platforms.
- Exceptional organizational skills and time management capabilities.
- Ability to engage effectively with young people while maintaining a professional distance.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing demands and priorities.
- Experience and Knowledge:
- Previous experience with youth program management or participation is a plus.
- Knowledge of workforce development, and social justice issues is an advantage.
- Self-starter with a proactive attitude.
- Grounded, yet adaptable to meet the needs of participants and city management.
- Comfortable stepping into tasks as needed to support team objectives.
