The Core Exterior Structural Systems organization is seeking a Technical Specialist specializing in Structural Components, specifically Body Mounts (a.k.a. Body Isolators), Tuned Mass Dampers and Tow/Recovery Hooks. As a Technical Specialist (TS), they will own the development, authorship, sign-off and maintenance of all related Core and Foundation documents. The TS is responsible to ensure programs are completing commodity execution with quality, and delivering institutional PCA’s based for systemic failures modes and escape points. The TS works as part of a team to solve new product design challenges, plant concerns, material shortage issues, and develops new technologies (materials and designs) to support future architectures. They will also develop and own a Structural Components strategic plan to ensure BIC quality, cost and lightweight execution within ever-evolving architectural platforms.

In this position...

  • Lead cross functional teams to identify, develop and deliver new / strategic design solutions which deliver BIC Quality, Cost and Weight objectives.
  • Lead planning, execution, and evaluation of new materials, new coatings, and new joining methods via internal and external laboratories in conjunction with Materials Engineering, Corrosion Engineering, R&A, suppliers, and other Structures Technical Specialists and SMEs which deliver future strategic Structural Systems solutions.
  • Benchmark competition and develop advance projects to ensure Ford is BIC.
  • Close cooperation with CAE-team for the development of simulation methods, material cards, and joining method cards.

What You'll Do...

  • Support Architecture and Applications customers – drive for quality and cost / weight efficiency.
  • Work with D/R team to optimize designs as a system.
  • Feasibility assessment of program-specific material combinations during the development phase.
  • Ownership of customer correlated Structural Component Requirements that meet and exceed regulatory and customer demands.
  • Perform Technical signoff (TSO) and High Impact Requirements (HIR) signoff at key program milestones, and program CDR signoffs.
  • Provide technical advice and support for concerns processed through Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG), the Automotive Safety Office (ASO), Office of General the Council (OGC) and Design Analysis teams.Institutionalize knowledge and best practices.
  • Develop, author, lead sign-off and maintain Core documents including ES’s, Requirements, Design Rules, DFMEA’s, training materials and other required documents.
  • Deliver / Manage Foundation/Quality documents (DVP, DFMEA, interface diagrams, boundary diagrams).
  • Develop new and continuously improved Engineering Specifications, standards and test methods – physical / analytical.Drive continuous improvement in the Supply Base.
  • Lead/participate in solving production issues with VO, Materials, STA, and Purchasing; these include and are not limited to: Stop-Ships, Field Service Actions, Warranty, Material Shortages.
  • Participation in patent committees.

You'll have...

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related physical science field of study
  • 10 years as a Body Exterior Design and Release Engineer or similar experience
  • 6 years experience with job responsibilities specific to Structural Components (body mounts preferred, but any combination of body mounts, tuned mass dampers, and tow/recovery hooks is acceptable).
  • Demonstrated expert level knowledge in body mount design attributes, including elastomer material types / properties, design attributes for durability / NVH, corrosion mitigation, control plan management and testing protocols.
  • Experience in all program phases from Pre-Program through Launch including one major (scale 4-6) program.
  • Working knowledge of applicable Design, Analysis, Verification, Quality, Manufacturing, and Assembly methods.
  • Demonstrated improvements in customer satisfaction, reduction in warranty, total cost reduction.
  • Working knowledge and experience with Engineering toolsets – CAE / CATIA, TCE.
  • Excellent written / verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated track record of strong leadership behaviors.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated capability to teach / coach / mentor and document technical knowledge.
  • Self-starter - ability to work effectively with little oversight

  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related physical science field of study.
  • Experience presenting at Technical Conferences and Publishing Technical Papers.
  • Patents / Invention, Defensive Disclosures / Trade Secrets and/or Technical Publications.
  • Experience with Advanced Technology development.
  • Experience with program timing and delivery requirements.
  • Experience writing DFMEA’s, Engineering Specifications, Requirements, Design Rules or equivalent Core documents
  • Multiple automotive launches.
