What are the responsibilities and job description for the Detention Technician I position at Leon County Sheriff's Office?
This position performs general support functions at the Leon County Detention Facility in a civilian capacity, answering to the Captain of Detention. This employee helps maintain the overall safety, and good functioning order of the Leon County Detention Facility by maintaining security access of personnel, inmates and processing visitors. The position exercises judgment and individual initiative in the performance of routine duties and in emergency situations, sometimes without immediate supervision. The position adheres to the agency core values of honesty and integrity, accountability, teamwork, trust and respect and commitment to excellence. To be successful in this position, the employee must demonstrate competency in Florida Model Jail Standards, Jail Standard Operational Procedures and LCSO General Orders, safety awareness, knowledge of geographical layout of the Leon County Detention Facility, general communication skills (both written and oral), inter-personal skills, problem solving, customer service skills and team building skills.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, rules and regulations and the application of such to the performance of the job.
- Ability to adhere to the standards and principles of the agency's core values and professionally represent the agency.
- Knowledge of the geography and layout of the Leon County Detention Facility and its property including highly secured areas and exit access areas.
- Operate a control panel to maintain and control doors and security of assigned areas.
- Operate a computer so that major systems can be maintained including but not limited to electronic logs, CJIS, FCIC and NCIC.
- Recognize and report potential penetrations, escapes and security breaches involving inmates or other unauthorized personnel.
- Ability to respond to a "man down" alarm in a quick and efficient manner.
- Demonstrate efficiency in fingerprinting persons manually and/or by using electronic fingerprint system.
- Adhere to, apply and maintain proper principles of safety and security awareness.
- Ability to effectively communicate with and securely process visitors to the Leon County Detention Facility.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- Ability to cope with stressful situations and perform calmly under stressful conditions.
- Ability to work closely with others as a team.
- Ability to prepare and present clear, accurate, concise and objective written and oral reports.
- Ability to report to work timely, consistently and as scheduled.
- Ability to report to work in times of an emergency disaster as declared by local, state or federal officials or agencies.
- Ability to work rotating 8–12-hour shifts involving daytime and night-time hours as well as weekends.
- Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Must be able to lift, push, carry or pull a minimum of 25 pounds independently.
- Position has an increased risk of occupational exposure to hazardous and infectious materials.
- Must be available during times of emergencies or natural disasters.
- Position may require mandatory overtime as designated by administration.
