This position supports the law enforcement and corrections function of the agency. The majority of the duties involve being responsible for public relations strategy, execution, and performance of messaging across multiple platforms (Facebook, lnstagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.); design and layout of internal and external publications, external advertising and internal employee messaging, as well as the delivery of compelling digital media content including, but not limited to, the creation of videos, and still photographs for the Leon County Sheriff’s Office. The incumbent also maintains the social media platforms of the Sheriff’s Office to bolster social media presence and engage citizens in the performance and accomplishments of the agency.  The position will assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of the effectiveness of the agency's communication strategy in support of the Sheriff’s Office overall communications goals. This position adheres to the agency’s core values of honesty and integrity, accountability, teamwork, trust and respect and commitment to excellence. To be successful in this position, the employee must demonstrate competency in design, layout, time management skills, intermediate computer skills, general communication skills (both written and oral), inter-personal skills, customer service skills and problem-solving skills. Starting salary above minimum may be considered for exceptionally well-qualified candidates. Potential for some remote work and flexible schedule. Salary anticipated to be at minimum of range.
  1. Ability to manage day-to-day social media content, drafting and scheduling posts across all channels including, but not limited to, Facebook, lnstagram, Twitter, YouTube, Nextdoor and Neighbors to create a constant flow of information to keep the public aware of current and upcoming events, crime tips, announcements, and other content as needed.
  2. Possess working knowledge of various design and video editing software used in the development of communication media, including, but not limited to Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Premiere Pro.
  3. Monitor social media channels daily, responding to comments in a timely manner and generating a sense of community and connection among followers.
  4. Remain current regarding social media trends to create content capable of going "viral."
  5. Respond in a timely manner to emails from public and agency members providing content for social media or questions regarding social media posts.
  6. Possess knowledge of social media analytics.
  7. Contribute to overall content development including taking photographs, recording video, and creating graphics, including photograph and live stream all Sheriff’s Office ceremonies and community events.
  8. Possess working knowledge of the principles and practices of media production, communications, and dissemination techniques and methods including alternative ways to inform the public orally, in writing, and through visual media.
  9. Design and prepare for printing, annual Leon County Sheriff's Office documents such as the Annual Report, Budget Report, Strategic Plan and School Resource Report, as well as the ability to edit and proofread documents to prepare for public dissemination.
  10. Understanding of various print and digital design formats such as: large format, booklet, billboards, etc.
  11. Ability to use software to disseminate agency messaging including changes to the LCSO app.
  12. Possess working knowledge of maintaining and updating websites, as well as the creation of new pages and graphics.
  13. Respond to major crime, or natural disaster scenes to photograph, video or live stream for public dissemination.
  14. Ability to self-manage projects and interact with both internal and external personnel in a manner that helps create a dynamic, team-based culture.
  15. Ability to prioritize tasks, deal effectively with competing and changing priorities, and meet deadlines.
  16. Ability to be accurate, detail-oriented, and organized.
  17. Ability to work within the constraints of both Sheriff’s Office guidelines and short timelines.
  18. Ability to work independently with general supervision.
  19. Ability to work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment with multiple project deadlines.
  20. Ability to work closely with others as a team.
  21. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  22. Ability to provide professional customer service skills to both the public and agency members.
  23. Ability to prepare and present clear, accurate, concise and objective written and oral reports.
  24. Ability to meet requirements and maintain required licensures and certifications as well as agency required in-service training.
  25. Ability to adhere to the standards and principles of the agency's core values and professionally represent the agency.
  26. Ability to report to work timely, consistently and as scheduled.
  27. Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the work place.
  • A bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university with a major in communications, public relations, journalism, media relations, marketing, multimedia, or closely related field (experience can substitute for education).
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite preferred;
  • Experience with social media preferred;
  • Experience with photo editing and video editing preferred;
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to operate an agency vehicle.
  • Must be able to lift, push, carry or pull a minimum of 25 pounds independently.
  • Work some nights, weekends, and holidays to support Sheriff’s Office events.
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in a subtropical climate in adverse weather conditions.
