Lewis Central Community School District is looking for School Van Drivers for the 2024-2025 school year.
Those with no experience are also encouraged to apply as we will provide paid training to assist with meeting all licensing and endorsement requirements.
Applicants must hold at minimum a Class D Chauffeur's License before they can be hired as a school van driver. A CDL would also meet this requirement. A school bus endorsement is also required but can be obtained as part of the paid training provided. As part of the training process, applicants will also complete a 14-hour online course (completed at work and paid by the District).
All applicants must also pass a DOT physical and a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

POSITION TITLE: Van Driver
FLSA: Hourly, Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Transportation Director
Basic Duties (not all inclusive):
- Completes the required pre-trip/route and post-trip/route inspections.
- Operates a district-provided van and related vehicle equipment in a safe, efficient, and legal manner.
- Responds to emergency situations in accordance with safety-standard operational procedures.
- Monitors and ensures that all students are following the rules while being transported.
Qualifications:
- No experience needed.
- Must be able to pass DOT physical and pre-employment drug/alcohol screening.
- Must have, at minimum, a Class D Chauffeur's License prior to hire. A CDL may also meet this requirement.
- Must be able to complete a 14-hour online training course to obtain school bus endorsement. Training is provided and paid for by the District.
- The District will provide paid training to assist in obtaining these necessary qualifications.
- Consistent attendance is necessary.
Hours/Schedule:
- The position is guaranteed 5 hours of pay per day with up to 7 hours per day depending on student transportation needs.
- This position is expected to work all days students are in session and require transportation to and from school (approximately 177 student days).
- Occasional transportation meetings, trainings, or requirements outside of regular hours may be necessary and will be paid unless noted otherwise.
Rate of pay:
- The hourly rate of pay starts at $15.00 for those who do not have a school bus permit.

Additional compensation opportunities:
- $0.10-$0.20 more per hour for prior driving experience (up to 5 years max).
- $0.75 per hour for completing all Department of Education (DOE) requirements for school bus permit.
- Your starting rate will be determined by the Business Office/HR after submitting your application and current qualifications.

Enrollment in IPERS (Iowa Public Employees' Retirement System) starting on your first day:
- District contributes 9.44% of your wages.
- You contribute 6.29% of your wages.
Paid Leave:
- 2 paid personal days each school year (prorated based on start date).
- Paid sick leave based on years of service (10 days in your first year, prorated based on start date).
- This position is not eligible for paid vacation leave.
