What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nurse Practitioner position at Lewis & Clark College?

PRIMARY PURPOSE


The Nurse Practitioner within the Student Health Center reports directly to the AVP for Student Health and Well-Being. This role is primarily responsible for providing medical care to students, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic health concerns, and promoting health and wellness. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and treatment skills, along with experience in primary or urgent care settings. To be successful in this position, the individual must excel at independent medical decision-making, collaboration with healthcare professionals, and delivering compassionate care to a diverse student population.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES


Clinical Care and Assessment

  • Provide independent, comprehensive medical assessments and diagnoses for both physical and mental health concerns.
  • Treat acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, developing personalized treatment plans.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic laboratory tests and imaging studies.
  • Conduct in-person and telehealth consultations, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Prescribe medications and therapies within the scope of practice, including laboratory testing and radiology.


Care Coordination and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with other Health Service clinic staff to ensure integrated, comprehensive, and confidential patient care.
  • Consult with specialists and make appropriate referrals based on patient needs.
  • Partner with campus and community organizations to expand students’ access to necessary services.
  • Participate in regular health service and interdisciplinary team meetings to enhance overall student well-being.


Education and Outreach

  • Stay current with advances in medicine through continuing education, as required by the Oregon State Board of Nursing and national certifying body.
  • Develop and deliver educational materials and presentations for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Represent the Student Health Center at relevant campus events and health information sessions.
  • Provide public health consultations to the wider campus community as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & BEHAVIORS

  • Proficient in clinical assessment and diagnosis with the ability to take comprehensive medical histories, perform physical examinations, and develop holistic treatment plans.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to deliver clear, compassionate, and professional interactions with patients, staff, and external partners.
  • Superior crisis management abilities and the capacity to handle emergency situations calmly, utilizing appropriate medical protocols and resources.
  • Extremely skilled in healthcare software and proficient with Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems for documentation and patient management.
  • Proficient in prescribing medications and treatments with knowledge of appropriate pharmacological therapies and the ability to manage prescriptions based on clinical assessment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines while maintaining the quality of care.
  • Superior knowledge of medical protocols and vaccination recommendations with expertise in current vaccination guidelines per Multnomah County, Oregon State, and CDC recommendations.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Master's degree in nursing.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in a primary care or urgent care clinic setting.
  • Current Nurse Practitioner and Registered Nurse license from the State of Oregon.
  • Current national certification as a Family or Adult Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current Drug Enforcement (DEA) license.
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association certification for CPR and Standard First Aid.



PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Experience as a medical provider in a higher education setting.
  • Current Dispensing license from the State of Oregon.



WORK SCHEDULE

  • This is a part-time, temporary position from February 10 through May 9, 2025 (excluding Spring Break from March 24-28).
  • The work schedule is 15 hours per week, with 2 days (Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays) from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm.
  • Not benefit eligible



PAY RATE

  • FLSA Status: Non Exempt
  • $70 per hour
