What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Shelver position at Lewis & Clark Library?
The Lewis & Clark Library’s Helena Location is hiring a* part-time Lead Shelver at 20 hours and as well as additional Shelvers* at 15 hours each. The Library is a hub of cultural, recreational and educational activity. The first free public Library in Montana Territory, Lewis & Clark Library has strong roots and wide-spreading branches, including Augusta, East Helena, Lincoln, and a Bookmobile, plus a book bike. The Library’s culture is innovative, smart, and slightly obsessive about the role high-quality Library service plays in our community and the world.
Both the Shelver and Lead Shelver roles play an important role in providing excellent library services, ensuring that library materials are properly routed, handled, and organized.
Shelver duties include but are not limited to:
- Sorts and organizes book carts of library materials.
- Shelves library materials in proper order and picks up materials used in the library
- Reads shelves for accuracy of order, re-shelving materials as needed.
- Assists with the general flow of materials.
- Shifts materials when shelf space is limited.
- Faces out books for display, refills displays, and maintains order in the stacks and surrounding areas.
- Provides directional information to patrons.
- Empties the book drop as needed.
- Clears books and magazines from tables and records statistics.
- Assists in checking in returned items.
- Assists in checking out items for librarians.
- Retrieves interlibrary loans and other requested items.
- Participate in inventorying the library collection.
- Provide directional and location information to library patrons.
Lead Shelver duties include the following additional duties, and other duties as assigned:
- Creates the monthly work schedule.
- Conducts monthly one-on-one check-ins with other shelvers.
- Problem-solves issues with peers and acts as the direct liaison to the Collections & Technical Services Manager.
- Manages stack maintenance procedures and activities to ensure collection health, provide space for collection growth, and facilitate a user-friendly browsing experience.
- Reviews Helena stacks daily and assigns shelvers daily projects to assist with stacks maintenance.
- Trains new shelvers and collaborates with Collections & Technical Services Manager to provide optional and required ongoing training and professional development.
- Communicates consistently via face-to-face, email, and Microsoft Teams channels to keep Collections & Technical Services Manager apprised of issues, project status, shelver performance, and so forth.
- Troubleshoots the schedule and ensures adequate coverage for workflow.
- Ensures materials are properly checked in, sorted, and shelved.
- Frequently monitors the public floor to supervise shelvers, review stacks health, and identify problems or projects.

FOR LEAD SHELVER
- Possess strong verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to supervise employees.
- Attends monthly All Staff Meeting (2nd Friday at 9am)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

- The employee must be able to see clearly and read numbers and letters.
- The employee must be able to perform moderate to vigorous physical work to lift and carry objects of moderate weight (12-20 pounds), pull and push a loaded book cart of very heavy weight (up to 100 pounds); the ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, and perform similar body movements repetitively.
- Work is performed in an environment that is generally quiet with moderate noise at times from program activities and library patron interactions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
The education and experience considered necessary to perform these duties and responsibilities is typically acquired by:
- Education: Some high school and must be at least 16 years of age.
- Experience: Or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
WAGE: For Shelver role, pay starts at $16.21 per hour with step increases to follow. For the Lead Shelver role, pay starts at the top of the grade at $18.37 per hour.

HOURS PER WEEK:
- 15 hours for the Shelver roles, with some flexibility.
- 20 hours for the Lead Shelver role.
