As part of our Standards division, o2si, is a leading manufacturer of organic reference materials. At our site in Charleston we produce customised organic Reference Materials (RM’s) and Certified Reference Materials (CRM’s) to support the chemical, environmental, petroleum, clinical, food safety, pharmaceutical and industrial hygiene industries. Our services in Charleston are accredited to ISO 17025 and ISO 17034 quality standards.
Job Description
The Quality Control Chemist will be responsible for preparing check standards and performing instrument maintenance. Success in this role requires attention to detail, teamwork, proven organizational skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Perform laboratory procedures to support ongoing operations and prepare in-house calibration standards.
- Adhere strictly to established standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments including GC/MS, GC/FID, HPLC, and UHPLC/MS.
- Follow both written protocols and verbal instructions accurately.
- Complete complex procedures with precision and achieve production and/or validation targets.
- Conduct timely validation of manufactured products to ensure quality and compliance.
- Perform instrument maintenance and troubleshooting to ensure flawless operation.
- Complete additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum of one year of experience in a production and/or manufacturing laboratory setting.
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or equivalent experience preferred.
- Experience with laboratory instruments is a plus but not required.
- Proficient in mathematics and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong communication skills.
- Effective problem-solving abilities and the capacity to apply learned knowledge.
- Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
- Able to work both independently with minimal direction and collaboratively as part of a team.
Preferred
- Basic knowledge of environmental laboratory methods and processes.
Physical Requirements
- This job may occasionally require lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- The position may require detailed hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
- Safety equipment is provided and must be used when there is a risk of exposure to chemicals or hazardous materials.
Working Conditions:
- Work Environment: Laboratory and data processing settings.
- Extreme Conditions: Exposure to low temperatures, including -20°C walk-in freezers and -80°C storage freezers.
- Protective Clothing: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in all laboratory areas.
- Potential Hazards: Risk of injury from open flames, hazardous chemicals, and sharps such as needles.
- Handling of Hazardous Waste – Always manage hazardous waste in compliance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan, relevant SOPs, state and federal regulations, and RCRA requirements.
