I.        NATURE OF POSITION:

  1. Designated by the Superintendent of Schools as the building administrator who is responsible for and accountable for planning, organizing, directing, staffing, and maintaining the daily operation of the building. Provide instructional leadership to staff including: curriculum planning, review, and implementation.  Responsible for day-to-day building administration and the safety and welfare of students, staff, and activities.  Ensures a safe, pleasant, and effective educational atmosphere; provides discipline as necessary, and enforces school policy.  Able to exercise a high degree of initiative and professional, independent judgment in accomplishing the aims of education and in carrying out the policies and guidelines established by the Board of Trustees, the School District Superintendent, and the State of Montana.  Skill in delegation of authority is essential.

 II.      ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

INSTRUCTION (Leadership)

  1. Responsible for supervising the school’s educational program.
  2. Supervises and evaluates certified and professional staff. Non-tenured teachers shall be visited at least once a semester for the purpose of improving instruction.  Tenured teachers shall be visited at least once each year with continued emphasis on growth and improvement.
  3. Responsible for supervising and evaluating classified, non-certified staff.
  4. Assists in recruiting, screening, hiring, and assigning staff
  5. Assists in the implementation of building and district staff development.
  6. Define staffing needs and make recommendations for staff transfer, promotion, or termination. Will assign teachers to classrooms and students to classes.
  7. Attends staffing on students.
  8. Completes reports pertaining to students.     
  9. Assists with extra curricular activities and attends many extra curricular activities.
  10. Serves on school district curriculum committees.
  11. Works with parent teacher organizations and other community groups dedicated to the improvement of community relations.
  12. Takes the leadership role in procurement of materials.
  13. Supervises and take leadership role in curricular planning within the building and makes recommendations for change.
  14. Determines the resources needed for curricular change. Involves teachers, department heads, students, and any other interested in the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum content.
  15. Maintains an educational school environment conducive to teaching and learning.
  16. Assumes responsibility as a member of the Management Team and share in district decision-making.  
  17. Coordinates building instructional programs with district curriculum administrators.
  18. Establishes building policies and procedures that guide the operation of the school.
  19. Interacts with students and staff in a constructive manner to encourage each individual to perform at their highest level.
  20. Assumes responsibility for providing a guidance and counseling philosophy that impacts all students in their effort to attain a quality education.
  21. Develops an educational plan (in writing) each year for growth, development, and change.

 

MANAGEMENT

  1.  Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board policies and regulations.
  2. Assumes responsibility for the safety and administration of the school plant.
  3. Supervises and monitors assigned accounts. Prepares preliminary information for school district budget.
  4. Prepares preliminary information for school district budget.
  5. Sees that budget allocations for program improvement are tied to instructional objectives.
  6. Administers student/staff fund raising activities.
  7. Makes recommendation for building improvements and capital outlay items.
  8. Schedules the use of the building.
  9. Reports dangerous or unsafe equipment to maintenance officials.
  10. Supervises student conduct within the school and oversees disciplining procedures.
  11. Maintains proper student records.
  12. Completes reports pertaining to students.
  13. Plans and supervises safety measures for students (i.e. fire drills, earthquake drills, and a plan for national disaster).
  14. Administers laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to student attendance.
  15. Arranges and approves teaching schedules for all instruction.
  16. Manages the maintenance and use of the physical plant to facilitate all activities and functions of the educational program.
  17. Works with maintenance personnel in establishing standards for building maintenance and custodial services.
  18. Evaluates custodial services.
  19. Establishes building policy and procedures that guide the operation of the school.
  20. Prepares and distributes a handbook of appropriate rules and policies to teachers, students, and parents.
  21. Works with the district office personnel to coordinate processes for effective functioning of the school.

HUMAN RELATIONSHIPS

  1. Develops a positive school climate and forms an effective rapport with the student body, yet maintains pupil order and discipline.   
  2. Works to maintain a positive relationship between school professional staff and auxiliary personnel. Promotes an environment of harmony and cooperation whereby the staff members can effectively work and obtain personal satisfaction in their jobs.
  3. Keeps parents and staff informed of disciplinary problems.
  4. Works with students who are disciplinary problems.
  5. Assists staff members in resolving student problems.
  6. Attends staffing on students.
  7. Arranges conferences with parents on student problems.
  8. Develops and encourages student involvement in the operations of the school where matters are of direct relationship to the students. Develops specific avenues by which this involvement can be utilized to the maximum benefit of the school system.
  9. Interprets district and school policies to students, staff, and public.
  10. Acts as a liaison between the school and the community, encouraging community participation in school life.
  11. Utilizes community resources and encourages the appropriate use of school facilities by citizens of the community.
  12. Develops and meets regularly with a parent advisory committees

PROFESSIONALISM

  1. Participates in professional activities.
  2. Takes part in related professional organizations.
  3. Contributes to development of educational improvement in district (i.e. makes presentations, workshops, etc.)
  4. Sets annual goals.
  5. Sets long-range goals.
  6. Develops a plan of professional growth consistent with job responsibilities.
  7. Encourages professional study on the part of the staff.
  8. Represents the school and/or school district in professional and community groups.
  9. Possesses such personal qualities as: alertness, cooperation, diplomacy, tolerance, compassion, moral and spiritual integrity, tact, openness and sensitivity in dealing with others; capacity and willingness to work long hours; acceptance and empathy of others interests and aspirations; courage and coolness in making decisions; high morale; and ability to communicate and motivate. 

III.   PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  1.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements that follow are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required.
  2. Proper Montana Teacher Certification.
  3. Administration requirements as set by statute.
  4. Five years experience in teaching and administration.
  5. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community; skill in oral and written communication.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and school board policies.
