The Director of the Copyright Office is responsible for administering provisions of the copyright law and other parts of Title 17 of the United States Code (the Copyright Act). Principal services of the Copyright Office include examining and registering claims to copyrights; publicly recording documents related to copyright; issuing certificates of registration and recordation; creating, maintaining, and making available a comprehensive public record of all registrations and recorded documents; administering the various statutory license provisions of the copyright law; administering mandatory deposit demands; providing basic copyright information services to the public; providing continuous technical and legal expertise on both domestic and international copyright matters, and other intellectual property matters to Congress, the executive branch, and the courts; participating in international intellectual property negotiations on behalf of the United States.
