Job Summary
The Department of Pathology is seeking a Clinical Microbiology Lab Supervisor to oversee operations in a full-service, 24/7 academic laboratory. This position requires expertise in clinical microbiology, with a strong preference for bacteriology experience. The supervisor will serve as a technical resource for staff, ensure quality assurance, oversee training and competency programs, and manage administrative functions such as scheduling, payroll approval, and policy implementation. This role will also support test validation and development, procedure documentation, and effective communication between staff and laboratory leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
Personnel Management
- Participate in interviewing, selecting, and hiring laboratory staff.
- Provide and coordinate onboarding and training for new employees.
Training, Competency, and Education
- Develop and implement continuing education opportunities.
- Oversee and evaluate training programs, ensuring staff competency before performing independent testing.
- Maintain performance competency documentation.
Staff Engagement & Development
- Set performance objectives and conduct quarterly performance reviews.
- Assess training needs and provide opportunities for professional growth.
- Foster a positive and engaging work environment through feedback and team-building activities.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Approve staff schedules, paid time off, and payroll for direct reports.
- Oversee laboratory inventory control and workflow efficiency.
- Communicate key updates through emails, staff meetings, and huddles.
- Implement and enforce laboratory policies and procedures.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Monitor test analyses to ensure high-quality performance.
- Implement corrective actions when performance deviates from expected standards.
- Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory agencies.
- Review high-complexity testing performed by qualified personnel.
- Oversee the laboratory's Quality Assurance Program.
Technical Expertise & Testing
- Supervise test validation and implementation in collaboration with the Technical Supervisor.
- Assist in writing and revising standard operating procedures.
- Maintain expertise in clinical microbiology to assess staff performance and provide technical support as needed.
- Monitor and optimize workflow for productivity and accuracy.
Management & Strategic Planning
- Work with laboratory leadership to improve operations and plan for future changes.
- Participate in new equipment selection and process improvements.
- Communicate operational changes and concerns to the Laboratory Manager and Pathology leadership.
Other Duties
- Participate in department projects and initiatives as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biological Sciences, or a related field.
- Expertise in one or more areas of clinical microbiology.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a clinical laboratory; 3-5 years of supervisory experience preferred.
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist is preferred.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, and perform laboratory tasks for extended periods; ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing staff in a CLIA-certified clinical lab setting.
- Expertise in bacteriology, including anaerobes, laboratory automation, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to train and mentor students, junior laboratory staff, and residents.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task, set priorities, and exercise sound judgment.
Shift and Salary
- Full-time (40 hours per week), exempt position.
- Day/evening shift with rotating weekends, holidays, and on-call duties.
- Approximately 60% of the time (24 hours per week) will be allocated to supervisory responsibilities.
- $60,000 - $90,000 annually
