What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgical Technician First Assist - Surgery position at Lima Memorial Health System?
Functioning within the Health System’s mission, values, objectives, and policies and procedures, the Surgical Technician First Assist functions as a first assistant in the operating room to support the Surgeon(s) before, during and following surgery. The Surgical Tech First Assistant acts under the direction of the RN and Physician. Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with operating room staff. Responsible for case preparation to include schedule review, booking sheet review to verify necessary equipment to be available and complete along with patient images and other necessary information. Demonstrates ability to assist in moving and positioning patient per surgeon’s guidelines. Participates in the “time-out” to confirm procedure with surgeon. Drapes patient within surgeon’s guidelines. Demonstrates complete competency in assisting the surgeon with case, including providing retraction of tissue for optimal visualization and appropriate retraction instrument and/or technique. Assists in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, use and application of appropriate surgical instrument for the task, placement of ties, placement of suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other measure as directed by the surgeon. Uses electro-cautery mono and bi-polar. Per physician’s directive, clamps, ligates, and cuts tissue; closes all wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous and skin); and inserts drainage tubes, Selects and applies wound dressings; assists with resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life-threatening events; performs casting independently per surgeon’s directive; and performs any other duties or procedures incident to the surgical procedure deemed necessary and as directed by surgeon. As time permits, participates in identified research studies, clinic or office activities, educational and program material development, etc. Services include but are not limited to General, CVOR, Ortho, OB/GYN, Podiatry, Robotics, Urology, Neuro, Vascular, ENT, Plastics, Hybrid, Robotic and Laser. On call response time within 30 minutes required.
Education: Must be a graduate of a surgical technician or an LPN program and surgical technician first assist program.
Licensure/Certification: BLS required. Current Certification as Surgical Technician, or valid unrestricted LPN license for the State of Ohio. Certification as a Certified Surgician Technician First Assist required.
Experience: Two years of experience in a surgical setting required.
Skills: Must have a willingness to train in all facets of Surgical Services including, but not limited to, Ortho, General, OB/GYN, Urology, ENT, Neuro, Vascular, and Plastics. Must be a highly motivated, dependable individual willing to work in a fast-paced, stressful environment. Professional attitude and demeanor required at all times. Excellent interpersonal communication skills required.
