JOB SUMMARY: Performs the primary functions of a professional nurse leader in assessing, planning, directing and evaluating patient care in nursing. Manages all supplies and equipment and supervises all personnel on the units and promotes team efforts with physicians and personnel of other departments.
OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Professional Nursing.
Personal Job-Related Skills: Demonstrated ability in nursing practice. Leadership and management abilities and effective oral and written communication skills.
Licensure, Registry or Certification: Registered Nurse currently licensed by the State of Texas. BCLS Certification and ACLS completion card.
Experience:
Prior Work Experience: Two years experience as a Registered Nurse. One year of supervisory experience
Technical Training: Current CPR certification
A. Plans, assesses, directs and participates in the delivery of all nursing care.
Participates in setting standards for patient care and nursing practice in all areas of nursing
Participates with the Director of Nursing assessing the health care status both acuity and number of patients needed to provide quality patient care
Collects data by interview, observation, inspection, auscultation and palpitation, and from the patient, family members and other health care providers
Ensures that all patients have a nursing care plan that identifies a patient’s assessed present and potential problems and formulates desired outcomes
Supervises and assists staff members providing care while remaining responsible for the delivery of quality nursing care
Acts rapidly and effectively and manages self, patients and other employees during any emergency situation
Assist with orientation of new employees by assessing the knowledge and skills required to provide nursing care including use of equipment. Provides assistance and for education and training that is required
B. Evaluates the quality of nursing care in compliance with the established standards of nursing practice
Evaluates nursing care policies, procedures and practices and recommends additions or revisions.
Continually evaluations nursing care provided by reviewing care plans, assessing patients, reviewing charts and participating in quality assurance activities.
Participates with the Director of Nursing in the evaluating of inservice programs, nursing orientation and the achievement of nursing objectives.
Identifies problem areas of patient care and assists in formulating plans of action or taking action to solve them.
C. Maintains the required inventory of supplies and equipment on all nursing units
Assess the supplies needed and assign personnel to check and order according to the par levels and turn in weekly to the Director of Nurses.
Determines equipment needs and assures equipment is maintained in good working condition. Fills out work order for repair or to take out of service.
Assures crash cart at the nursing station is checked and code equipment is present and in good working order, medications are checked and out of date drugs are removed and replaced.
D. Facilitates favorable relationship between the units, Medical Staff and other hospital departments and seeks input regarding nursing care
Gives input in the development of department policies, procedures and practices and monitors for compliance and consistency once established.
Assist in orienting, developing, evaluating, disciplining through written counseling of employees in compliance with hospital policy.
Participates in the preparation of the department budget and monitoring the utilization of approved budget resources with special attention to assuring appropriate use of supplies and supply levels.
Participates in the copying of forms for charts, flow sheets and other needed chart items on a daily basis.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS
Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
Interacts with patients, family members, Medical Staff members and other department managers on a continuous basis.
Follows aseptic procedures and procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials.
Follows safety guidelines and policies of the Medical Center.
Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require moderate physical activity. Extended periods of standing and walking. Bending, stooping, twisting, reaching and lifting up to 50 pounds. Occasional heavy lifting when moving or supporting patients who may suddenly become weak or helpless.
