What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Keeper-Birds position at Lincoln Park Zoological Society?
GENERAL SUMMARY
Works under general supervision in the Bird department. This is a seasonal position. Seasonal bird keeper will work every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. 32 hrs per week
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provides daily care and routine husbandry birds within the bird department to include: diet preparation and feeding, feeder insect care, exhibit maintenance, behavioral enrichment, operant conditioning and record keeping
- Provides medical treatment as prescribed by veterinarian
- Carries out duties and job assignments delegated by zoological manager
- Public speaking during African Penguin encounter program
- Interacts with and supervises guests entering African penguin exhibit
- Works closely with animal keepers to ensure safety of animals and guests
- Ensures work space, tools, and equipment are clean, organized and functioning properly
- Performs various tasks and other duties as assigned
ADDITIONAL REPONSIBILITIES
- May assist with animal procedures including animal handling and animal transporting
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- General knowledge of animal behavior, preferably avian behavior
- Good observation skills with the ability to recognize animal illness/injury
- Ability to work in a team environment, but also independently at times
- Ability to exercise sound judgment regarding work activities
- Ability to exhibit patience when caring for animals
- Ability to clearly communicate.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy when interacting with guests, coworkers, and volunteers
- Ability to read and understand written and oral instructions
- Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, zoo visitors and general public
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High School degree (or equivalent)
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Public speaking/demonstration preferred. Demonstrated aviculture experience preferred.
Note: A comparable combination of education, experience or training that would provide the level of knowledge, skills and ability required may qualify individuals.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to move or carry up to 50 lbs.
Ability to remain on feet for long periods
Ability to bend, move, position and ascend
Ability to climb ladders
No allergy to plants or animals that may interfere with the ability to work.
Ability to work in all weather conditions and both indoor and outdoor environments
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Available to work special events that may occur outside of regular work schedule as assigned.
Valid driver’s license with good driving record is preferable.
Proof of negative TB test.
Proof of covid vaccine.
