School Counselor Job Description
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Design and deliver school counseling programs that improve student outcomes in academics, career, and personal/social skills.
- Collaborate with students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders to implement programs to promote academic achievement and personal success .
- Lead, advocate and collaborate to promote equity and access for all students by connecting the school counseling program to Lincoln Charter School’s mission and community expectations.
- Take an active role in analyzing local, state, and national data to develop and enhance school counseling programs. Create data-driven goals and strategies that align with the school to improve student learning.
- Uphold the ethical and professional standards of ASCA and promote the development of the school counseling program based on the following areas of the ASCA National Model: define, deliver, manage and assess.
- Provide input in the selection of professional development for the school staff that meets the needs of students and fosters their own professional growth.
- Promote awareness of and responsiveness to learning styles, cultural diversity, and individual learning needs and assist others in understanding how these areas influence school performance.
- Mentor and support colleagues to improve the academic success of students and work collaboratively with all staff to create a positive learning community.
- Improve communication and collaboration among the school, home, and community in order to promote and build trust, understanding, and partnerships with all segments of the school community.
- Seek solutions to overcome barriers that may stand in the way of effective family and community involvement in the education of students.
- Create an environment that is inviting, respectful, supportive, inclusive, and flexible.
- Model and teach behaviors that lead to positive and nurturing relationships through developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented activities.
- Use academic, behavioral, and attendance data to plan appropriate programs for students that are culturally diverse and responsive to student needs.
- Administer and interpret tests within the testing program.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Desire and ability to work with students at the specified age level with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability toward accomplishing their educational goals.
- Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines and communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators and other staff, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive.
- Working familiarity with student assessment tools, especially in evaluating and interpreting standardized test results.
- Knowledge of educational software.
- Adept at creating systems for change and at building relationships within the school community.
- Create nurturing relationships with students that enhance academic achievement and personal success
- Staying current in research and best practices.
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
- Certification as a School Counselor with a Master’s degree in Counseling preferred.
- Meet the state certification/licensure standards
- Fulfill continuing education requirements
- Uphold ASCA ethical and professional standards

Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
