- Knowledge of the methods and practices of professional security procedures including those used in patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation, and identification of incidents, and safety, fire and intrusion alarm systems, relevant safety laws, regulations, and procedures, including blood borne pathogen procedures and self-defense tactics is preferred.
- Knowledge of pertinent college ordinances and regulations is also preferred.
- Requires the ability to perform all of the duties of the position effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to utilize all of the tools and equipment of the position in a safe and responsible manner.
- Must be able to analyze potentially dangerous situations quickly and objectively, and determine and take effective action.

- Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, plus a minimum of one year of experience in retail customer service, a call center position, or other comparable experience demonstrating good communication and de-escalation skills.
- Additional related education in criminal justice or retail management may substitute for experience.
- A valid Oregon driver's license and valid Oregon Private Security Unarmed Officer certification (PS-DPSST) are required. Current first aid and CPR cards are also required, or must be obtained within 60 days of employment.
- Preference may be given to applicants with prior work experience related to civil officer, military police, safety or security officer, especially within a community college or university environment, or other comparable experience.
Physical Skills And Abilities
- Requires prolonged periods of walking indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, on hard level surfaces, and up and down stairs.
- Occasional lifting of medium to lightweight objects (10 to 50 pounds) and infrequent lifting of objects over 50 pounds.
- Must have the ability to sprint up to 100 yards.
- Requires kneeling, stooping, and crouching.
- Requires arm, hand, and finger dexterity sufficient to prepare reports using computer keyboard and to lock/unlock doors, gates, etc., and perform minor maintenance and repairs.
- Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers.
- Requires speaking and hearing ability sufficient to hear over 2-way radio, phone, and cell phone, and carry on routine conversations.
- Work is performed indoors, outside under covered walkways, or outside with exposure to inclement weather conditions (generally less than 50% of the time).
- May be exposed to stressful or potentially dangerous situations or incidents.
- Working swing or graveyard shifts is required, including weekends and holidays.
- Occasional on-call, or call back during urgent or emergent events is required.
- This position works an average of 18 hours per week.
- Patrols College grounds to detect and deter crimes against persons and property. Ensures safety of students, faculty, staff, and members of the public. Assesses situations and may be required to intervene in incidents involving violence or threats of violence. When needed, assists in the containment of such incidents until arrival of regular law enforcement personnel.
- Reports safety hazards encountered through routine observation and inspection while on patrol duties, and takes action to rectify as warranted by implementing accident prevention procedures. Conducts safety audits as requested and assists with other safety tasks if needed, such as battery recycling, eye wash testing, spill kit restocking, hazardous materials/waste spill clean-up, or moving of hazardous materials. Monitors College facilities and equipment. Notifies designated personnel regarding impaired equipment and malfunctions.
- Protects college property and facilities by making inspections on foot, bicycle, or in patrol vehicle. Checks buildings for physical security. Inspects and monitors the security of doors, windows, and gates; and checks fire safety equipment. Prevents entry, and reports presence of unauthorized persons on grounds or in buildings. Locks and unlocks campus facilities as required. Investigates and reports situations and disturbances as needed.
- Monitors video surveillance systems and reviews video footage for investigation of incidents. Responds to any unusual or suspicious activity and takes action when necessary in the enforcement of state and local laws and college policies and administrative rules. Issues citations to improperly parked vehicles and violations of applicable traffic laws per college policy.
- Conducts preliminary investigations of incidents and prepares investigative crime follow-up and electronic incident reports relating to observed violations. May contact persons involved in crimes or other incidents, as warranted, to conduct interviews and ensure appropriate follow-up actions.
- Proactively assists students, staff, and visitors by providing information, services, and responding to questions. Promotes positive college relations and may serve as college host to help visitors to the College.
- Responds to complaints and hazardous situations. Conducts investigations of reported injuries and accidents. Responds to fire and medical emergencies and provides crisis intervention in conflict situations.
- Maintains a working knowledge of the campus fire alarm system and annunciator panel. May be required to broadcast emergency messages over campus mass notification systems. Assists in emergencies, responds to medical emergencies and summons Emergency Responders. May serve in several roles during an emergency including Incident Commander until relieved, as traffic controller in parking lots, performs first aid, CPR, and other basic life support until more advanced medical support personnel arrive, and act as first point of contact with emergency responders to assist them in directly locating site of emergency and/or other duties as appropriate.
- Maintains current knowledge of College disaster and emergency response protocols. Participates in drills and emergency exercises.
- Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses.
- Provides Safety and Loss Prevention Office back-up and assistance by monitoring phones/switchboard console, processing key requests, handling lost and found items, making staff badges, and backing up office personnel. Provides customer service to persons that come into the office for assistance.
- Maintains a current DPSST certification and current knowledge of LBCC Public Safety protocols and industry best practices.
