The Occupational Therapist (OT) is responsible for evaluating, planning, and implementing individualized therapeutic programs to help residents or patients regain independence in activities of daily living (ADLs) and improve their quality of life. Working in a healthcare, long-term care, or rehabilitation setting, the OT helps individuals who are recovering from injury, illness, or disabilities to achieve optimal functional independence. The OT collaborates with the interdisciplinary care team, providing specialized therapeutic interventions that promote physical, emotional, and social well-being.
Key Responsibilities:

Patient Assessment and Evaluation:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of residents’ or patients’ physical, cognitive, and psychosocial abilities to determine functional limitations and rehabilitation potential.
- Develop individualized care plans that focus on restoring function, improving ADLs, and promoting independence.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to establish appropriate therapy goals based on the patient's needs.

Therapeutic Intervention:
- Plan, implement, and monitor occupational therapy programs that help patients develop or regain skills necessary for daily living and working.
- Provide therapeutic treatments such as exercises, activities, adaptive equipment training, and modifications to the home or work environment.
- Educate patients and their families on techniques to maintain or improve functionality at home.
- Assist patients with mobility, positioning, and strengthening exercises to improve coordination and motor skills.

Patient Progress Monitoring:
- Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions, adjusting care plans as needed to ensure optimal outcomes.
- Document patient progress and outcomes in the electronic health record (EHR) system, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
- Communicate regularly with the interdisciplinary care team regarding patient progress and any necessary changes to the treatment plan.

Discharge Planning and Education:
- Assist with discharge planning, including recommendations for continued therapy, home modifications, or the use of assistive devices.
- Educate patients, families, and caregivers on how to safely manage ADLs and mobility at home.
- Provide recommendations for adaptive equipment, such as walkers, canes, and prosthetics, to enhance independence.

Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and facility regulations related to occupational therapy services.
- Follow infection control protocols, safety measures, and ethical standards during the delivery of care.
- Maintain proper documentation of services and ensure that all therapy activities meet regulatory and professional guidelines.

Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with physical therapists, speech therapists, nurses, and other care providers to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care meetings, providing input on patients' progress and therapy needs.
- Serve as a resource to other staff members and offer guidance on therapeutic techniques and interventions.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program.
- Licensure: Current and active Occupational Therapist (OT) license. Certification from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) is required.
- Experience: Previous experience in a healthcare, long-term care, or rehabilitation setting is preferred, but new graduates are welcome to apply.
- Skills:
- Strong clinical skills in evaluating, planning, and implementing therapy programs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient-centered approach to care.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary care team.
- Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and documentation.
