The Commodity Manager position for Rock River Lumber and Grain Co., an agricultural and retail lumber company headquartered in Prophetstown, IL, is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of eight-grain elevators located in Northern Illinois. The operations consist of 7 trucks and 1 rail shuttle loading facility. You will manage a team of originators, merchandisers, and grain accounting operations. You will work with operations to help manage grain quality, logistics, risk management, and customer relations.
Team Leadership
- Supervise, train, and mentor staff to enhance productivity and performance.
- Ensure proper staffing levels and manage scheduling to meet operational demands.
- Oversee all operations and logistics to provide an efficient flow of inbound and outbound grain.
Customer Relations
- Build and maintain strong relationships with farmers, transportation partners, and end users.
- Address customer inquiries and concerns to resolve issues and ensure satisfaction.
- Promote the company’s high-quality services and build partnerships within the agricultural community.
Financial Management
- Develop and manage the division's budget to achieve financial goals.
- Help implement the strategic plan to foster growth and profitability.
- Negotiate contracts with suppliers and buyers to maximize value and facilitate efficient logistical operations
- Manage risk in cash and futures to enhance profitability.
Strategic Planning
- Develop and execute strategies to grow the division's market share and profitability.
- Analyze market trends, competitor activities, and customer needs to identify growth opportunities.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to align the division's goals with the company’s strategic vision.
Working Conditions
- The role requires a mix of office work, occasional operations site work, and site visits to company locations.
- Occasional travel to meet customers or inspect operations on-site.
- Required to work extended hours during peak agricultural seasons

Job Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Agriculture or Business
- 7 to 10 years of experience in cash grain trading (truck and rail)
- Proven leadership with strong analytical and negotiation skills.
