Pay rate is based on years of experience and skills and starts at $21/hr
Major responsibilities include the following. Other responsibilities may be assigned.
- Prepares athletic fields for play including initial layout, striping, chalking, dragging, and leveling fields. Will lay sod, spread grass seed, and apply fertilizer and herbicide as needed. Will apply field drying agents and conditioners to expedite the drying process and will work proactively to restore fields to playability after it rains.
- Operates Park District vehicles, tractors, loaders, and other motorized equipment, including vehicles and equipment with trailer attachments.
- Operates equipment including but not limited to mowers, weed whips, pressure washers, blowers, chainsaws, woodchippers, aerators, spreaders, and other power tools as required.
- Conducts visual inspections of athletic fields, dugouts, bleacher/spectator areas, fencing, and surrounding areas, promptly removing all safety hazards, garbage, and debris on an ongoing basis regardless of assigned task. Reports hazards or any unsafe condition(s) to the Parks Manager.
- Performs daily pre-operation inspections on mowers, tractors, trucks and other equipment.
- Troubleshoots and resolves site drainage issues to prevent flooding, ponding on athletic field surfaces, or water damage.
- Maintains inventory of athletic field maintenance items including paint, chalk, and repair parts.
- Assists in identifying the materials and supplies needed for projects, ensuring that all necessary items are gathered and/or purchased in advance and adequate stock is maintained.
- Assists other Parks Department personnel in general park landscape maintenance as needed.
- Safely operates snow and ice removal equipment, including snowplows, snowblowers, salt spreaders, and shovels. Performs snow removal and ice clearing as needed.
- Communicates with park district Recreation Department, high school coaches, and affiliate organization representatives to discuss field conditions and ensure playability for scheduled events and activities.
- Tracks field usage, material usage, and other costs for park district reimbursement.
- Assists with special event preparation, operation and clean-up as required.
- Maintains irrigation systems and troubleshoots as needed.
- Trains and delegates tasks to assigned seasonal and part-time employees.
- Makes recommendations for improved operational efficiencies and cost control, risk management/safety, and access to parks and recreation services.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years related work experience including experience in landscaping, grounds keeping or athletic field maintenance and irrigation systems. Preferred experience using specialized field equipment, tractors, mowers, light and heavy trucks and a variety of hand and power tools.
Must possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License with excellent driving record.
State Pesticide Operator's License is preferred. Required to pass pesticide exam within 6 months of beginning employment.
Physical requirements include good speaking, hearing and vision abilities, and strong manual dexterity. Requires extended periods of standing, walking, climbing, bending, reaching, stooping, twisting, and operating equipment. The ability to lift and carry between 25 and 60 pounds frequently, and over 60 pounds occasionally. Anything lifted over 50 pounds must be achieved with assistance (mechanical or team-lift).
Will require working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Will work with exposure to chemicals including fertilizers, weed killers and cleaning agents.
