Position Summary :

The Finance Director is responsible for directing the fiscal functions of the organization. The Finance Director will define the process and implement the infrastructure or systems to maintain and support the growth of the organization. The Finance Director will continue to build and maintain effective and streamlined administrative / financial systems, including internal controls, separation of duties, cost allocation plans, fiscal policies and procedures, and procurement policies. The Finance Director is responsible for overseeing a $5 million budget and assuring that all expenses are paid in a timely manner, including local, state, and federal taxes. The Finance Director is responsible for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting to the funding sources. The Finance Director will prepare program budgets and the organization's budget and will prepare financial reports for the Board of Directors.

The Finance Director manages all financial functions including : accounting, billing, reconciling, budget development and tracking, payroll, financial operations, finance personnel management, business line insurance coverage, grant budgets, and capital improvement budget.

  • Supervise finance and accounting teams. Provide direction to assigned staff in the performance of their duties, establishing work priorities to achieve strategic and operating plan goals; prepare and manage associated budgets.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to equity, excellence, and high expectations for all staff and volunteers by creating organizational policies and structures that remove barriers and foster inclusion for all.
  • Forecasting, Planning, and Budgets. Work with leadership and other staff to project and prepare the annual operating budget for recommendation to the President and Board of Directors. Work with other team members to develop and monitor specific event, program, and initiative budgets, including geographic affiliates, initiatives, grants, and other budget classes.
  • Communication. Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of Literacy Minnesota’s financial status. Serve as the principal contact for financial-related inquiries from donors, outside audit firms, and any requests regarding IRS public disclosure and availability requirements of annual returns and exemption applications; manage responses to industry surveys; represent Literacy Minnesota at events as required and appropriate.
  • Financial Reporting. Review and reconcile information on statements from financial institutions. Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements and summary financial information and other necessary and requested financial reports for the President, Financial Committees, and Board. Clearly communicate to the President any cost savings ideas, revenue generating issues or budget variance items.
  • Fund Management. Ensure that all funds held by Literacy Minnesota are accounted for in the proper manner according to IRS regulations, FASB, and other generally accepted accounting principles by accurately posting revenues and expenses regularly. Monitor the processing of all gifts and grants from new and existing donors to ensure compliance with donor intent and report all fund information as needed or requested. Support other Literacy Minnesota staff in the administration of charitable grants from donors; oversee the processing of any investments for Literacy Minnesota.
  • General Accounting. Analyzes accounting records to determine financial resources required to implement programs and submits recommendations for budget allocations. Ensure that Literacy Minnesota is properly recording all transactions by preparing monthly account reconciliations for Portico’s bank and any investment accounts; calculating monthly transfers as needed; issuing administrative payments on a monthly basis; maintaining Literacy Minnesota’s balance sheet by preparing monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts, and ensuring the proper recording of revenue and expense items.
  • Participates in strategic planning for the organizations. Provides leadership and consulting support to executives and management on matters of reinforcing culture, setting goals, developing policy, and implementing strategic objectives. Aligns organizational structure, roles, and responsibilities to achieve goals.
  • Enhance and / or develop, implement, and enforce financial policies and procedures of the organization through systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the organization. Work with some committees of the board.
  • All other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required (business, nonprofit management, accounting, finance).
  • 10 years of professional experience in all aspects of accounting and finance. Someone with a passion for organizational management, a background in finance, a strong background in nonprofit management and a track record in finances. A detailed understanding of nonprofit finance and accounting functions is critical. This can be experience as fiscal manager and / or senior-level administrator with a demonstrated record of achievement.
  • 3 years of supervising and leading teams. Capacity for managing and leading people; ability to connect to staff both individually and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability; ability to develop and empower leaders from the bottom up and lead from the top down; strong commitment to follow-through; and high emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends and incorporate them into the organizational planning.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic groups
  • Current knowledge and understanding of regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, and applicable laws regarding nonprofit sector
  • Proficiency in business and human resources related computer applications, which may include talent management systems, time, and attendance systems, etc.
  • Critical, lateral thinker; ability to connect the dots.
  • Proven track record of exhibiting sound judgment with the highest ethical standards.
  • Well-organized, self-disciplined, decisive with an ability to balance the “big picture, long-term view” with a hands-on, day-to-day focus.
  • Self-starter, ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Superior analytical skills.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Experience in working with high-profile community leaders, the Board of Directors, and its committees, as well as donors, etc. to nonprofit organizations.
  • Outstanding written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and FASB standards and IRS regulations as they apply to nonprofit agencies.
  • Knowledge of the nonprofit sector financial management.
  • Capable of managing all aspects of finance and administration and maintaining effective relationships with financial institutions.
  • Proven knowledge of accounting and financial systems.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Previous experience with Sage Intacct or similar software
