Pit Foreman
Job Overview
The Pit Foreman supervises the day-to-day activities, and assesses the resources needed to complete daily excavation, hauling and stockpile of plant feed for plant sand & gravel production needs. The Pit Foreman manages the general pit production staff, delegates tasks to team members, and manages the overall pit performance of providing feed to the plant, removal of overburden, water management, equipment maintenance, and employee schedule. They observe all activities in the pit and maintain documentation that measures production accomplished. The Pit Foreman provides the management and technical direction for the site’s safety, quality, productivity, and cost controls.
The Pit Foreman reports to the Site Superintendent.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a clean, safe, drug-free worksite.
- Maintain 'No Lost Time Accidents' and enforce safety policies and administer corrective actions on safety violations. Ensure proper safety equipment is available and used.
- Perform daily workplace exams, toolbox talk and equipment inspection sheets.
- Pit efficiencies- Maintain good quality/quantity of feed pile at the plant area.
- Keep one month of pit run, stripped and ready to excavate.
- Maintain pumps and water levels in Pit to maximize efficiencies in quantity and quality of plant feed. (Use float switches, floats on suction lines, float entire pump when possible)
- Understand/manage production quantity goals daily and what issues are causing a lack of production and make real time changes to correct any known inefficiencies.
- Supervise, monitor, and improve daily production.
- Management of employees to include keeping a minimum of 2 equipment operators “on deck” (already contacted, phone screened, ready to be interviewed)
- Effectively communicate responsibilities and expectations to employees to ensure satisfactory performance.
- Maintain and communicate employee work schedule a minimum of one week ahead.
- Ensure load counts are being reported correctly and turned in daily by each haul truck operator.
- Provide training opportunities to subordinates for continuous improvement and cross-training.
- Ensure the equipment is inspected upon arrival and cleaned and fueled before leaving the job.
- Ensure all equipment inspection sheets are completed daily and spot check reports to confirm that all equipment inspections are being done accurately.
- Perform other duties as required by management.

- 18 years old or older
- Management experience
- Experience operating heavy machinery(excavator, front end loader, articulated truck, dozer)
Physical Qualifications
- Strength and Endurance: Ability to exert force when pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying objects, often weighing up to 50 pounds or more occasionally.
- Mobility: Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, twisting, and climbing.
- Hand-Eye Coordination: Precise control of levers, pedals, and other controls on the machinery.
- Vision: Good depth perception and clear vision to accurately gauge distances and identify potential hazards.
- Hearing: Ability to hear instructions and machine sounds.
- Balance and Stability: Maintaining proper posture while operating machinery in varying terrains. Able to climb in and out of equipment safely.
