SUMMARY: Provides support to the Fisheries Biologist and Natural Resources Department by planning and participating fieldwork, research, experimental fish rearing, data collection, management, and analysis and all aspects of the Cisco Rehabilitation Program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fieldwork:

  • Conduct fisheries surveys in the field as crew lead on Lake Michigan using a variety of gear types (gill nets, seines, trawls, neuston nets, hydroacoustics equipment).
  • Plan and execute GLFP work-plans in the absence of the Great Lakes Fisheries Biologist when needed as the biologist will travel at different points of the year to attend Lake Meetings and other committee gatherings.
  • Collect, manage, and analyze biological data (sex, age, maturity, spawning condition, diet, health status) of harvested fish.
  • Transport and operate Tribal research vessels.
  • Download and archive environmental data and underwater video collected from field.
  • Coordinate with the Great Lakes Biologist and Hatchery Manager in fish tagging and stocking activities.
  • Operate various equipment (GPS, field meters, radios, power tools, etc. as needed).
  • Operate computer equipment and technology as relates to job (arcGIS, image pro, Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word, Echoview 5, Visual Habitat, R).
  • Deploy and retrieve acoustic telemetry receivers and tags.
  • Deploy, retrieve, and maintain weather stations Research:
  • Participate in the development of methodology to estimate abundance, biomass, and population structure of stocked and wild, adult and juvenile Lake Whitefish or other Coregoninesin Lake Michigan
  • Assist the Fisheries Biologist in coordinating research design.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of experimental aquaculture research to develop gamete collection, fertilization, and rearing techniques for important Great Lakes species of interest (Lake Whitefish, Cisco, other species as determined by current and future departmental goals.   • Conduct habitat and fisheries assessments using hydroacoustic equipment and carry out subsequent analyses.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of an annual trawling assessment targeting juvenile Cisco, Lake Whitefish, and other forage fishes.
  • Analyze data, conduct statistical analyses on complex datasets, create publication quality figures and graphs.
  • Explore and describe data using statistical software (including excel, access, and R) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Participate in preparation of reports and/or presentations and/or peer-reviewed publications.
  • Pursue possible funding opportunities and work in a team to prepare funding or grant proposals.
  • Assist Fisheries Biologist with future fish research and management developments.
  • Investigate potential fishery enhancement and habitat restoration projects.
  • Assist the Fisheries Biologist design and execute current and future Telemetry projects lead by LTBB and work collaboratively with GLATOS.
  • Examine Lake Whitefish otoliths for OTC marks when needed.
  • Analyze scale, fin and/or otolith samples for age determination.

Other Duties:

  • Responsible for maintaining and fisheries equipment (boat, trucks, lab equipment, etc.).
  • Monitor inventory and submit supply orders.
  • Assist in office coverage as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree (B.S.) emphasizing fisheries, biology, natural resource management, environmental science or related field from four-year College or university required. Strong consideration will be given to applicants who have recently completed a graduate program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated boating experience required. Demonstrated proficiency with database, statistical, spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office products: Access, Excel, R, ArcGis, etc.) required. Experience designing and conducting fisheries studies in large lakes strongly preferred. Acoustic telemetry experience preferred. Familiarity with standard fisheries assessment gear required. Experience with fish collection, tagging, and aging techniques preferred. SCUBA open-water certification is desirable.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this position, the employee will be required to stand, walk, use hands, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, swim, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl especially when working with fisheries equipment on the lake. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Must be mechanically inclined so as to be able to maintain and make minor repairs on the fisheries assessment vessel and equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Will be regularly exposed to wet and/or humid condition and extreme outdoor weather conditions. The employee will be frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Occasionally field duties will require traveling long distances in harsh weather. Must be able to work on the great Lakes in all weather conditions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRTIONS: Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and be insurable for duration of employment.

COMMENTS: Indian preference will apply. Individuals must pass a thorough background investigation.

ABOUT US: On Sept. 21, 1994, the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB) was federally reaffirmed with the signing of Public Law 103-324. The Tribe is governed by a nine-member Tribal Council who serve staggered terms. The LTBB Government presently employs over 200 employees across more than 20 departments, ranging from Healthcare to Natural Resources.
