Maintenance and Preservation Manager


Historic Ships in Baltimore is the steward of five National Historic Landmarks:  The sloop-of-war USS Constellation., the WWII submarine USS Torsk, US Coast Guard Cutter WHEC-37, Lightship 116 Chesapeake and the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse.   As stewards our primary mission and responsibility is to maintain, preserve and interpret these artifacts and the related collections in our care and to promote their use as cultural and educational resources to the benefit of the public.

The Maintenance and Preservation Manager reports directly to the Seaport Managing Director and is responsible for carrying out the mission and objectives of the Historic Ships in Baltimore and Living Classrooms Foundation.  The Maintenance and Preservation Manager oversees the planning and implementation of ship maintenance, preservation, security, and restoration.  The regular work schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday to accommodate management and supervision of volunteer activities. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


- Direct supervision of maintenance and preservation staff and volunteers.

- Planning and implementing day to day, mid- and long-term maintenance and preservation activities and maintaining records of these activities for future reference.

- Development and management of the annual maintenance and preservation budget.

- In-charge, vessel and facility safety and security program including alarm systems and response protocol.

- Management of organizational emergency planning and inclement weather response.

- Organizing weekly planning and logistics meetings with staff.

- Semi-annual performance review and goal / action plan management with paid staff.

- Primary liaison with organized volunteer groups, such as Torsk Volunteer Association.

- Primary liaison with US Navy, National Park Service and other oversight organizations.

- Vetting, hiring of consultants, contractors, and specialized skills personnel for special projects.

- Maintaining inventory of items in off-site storage, their locations, and points of contact.

- Oversee activities of the HSB Advisory Board Facilities Committee.

- Preparation of annual Facilities Report for LCF Trustees

COORDINATED RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT MAY NOT BE LIMITED TO:

-Working with the Seaport Managing Director to plan and manage grant supported projects and other duties related to budget and finance.

- Working with LCF Volunteer Coordinator to create opportunities for volunteers, interns, and apprentices; record hours, maintain database, submit waivers, etc.

- Providing the HSB Operations Department with staff to support special events as requested.

- Working with LCF Facilities Director to coordinate manpower needs for inclement weather and emergency response.

- Working with LCF Fleet Captain and LCF Facilities Manager to maintain Douglass Myers boat shop space.

- Working with HSB and LCF staff, as required, to plan and implement special projects.

 GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT MAY NOT BE LIMITED TO:

- Providing for safe working conditions and required PPE for staff, volunteers, and interns on board our vessels on deck, below and aloft, and in our buildings and shop spaces.

- Promotion of safe work habits for ship’s staff, volunteers, and interns.

- Being an effective leader promoting a positive work ethic and morale among ship’s staff, volunteers, and interns.

-  Being an effective spokesperson for Historic Ships in Baltimore and Living Classrooms.

- Such other duties or special projects as assigned by the Seaport Managing Director

 POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

- Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered.  Proof of vaccination will be required.

- Must be willing to submit to pre-employment drug testing and background check, with negative results.

- 4-Year Bachelors Degree or demonstrated equivalent work/life experience.

- At least 5 years of experience in the maritime maintenance field with demonstrated knowledge of wood and steel vessel maintenance and preservation needs.  Electrical and plumbing/mechanical systems knowledge is helpful. 

-  Excellent communications and organizational skills with an emphasis on attention to detail.

- Ability to be on-call as needed.  Some weekend, evening and Holiday work is expected.

-  Ability to travel as needed and have personal transportation.

-  Excellent time management skills and ability to manage multiple projects and responsible delegation of work to staff

-  Must be computer literate and be knowledgeable of Microsoft Office programs including MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, and be willing and able to learn and use other technologies as necessary.

-  Ability to interact in a professional manner with program participants, staff, donors, Advisory Board, volunteers, and all others.

- Ability to represent Living Classrooms and the programs under this department with professional confidence.

- Ability to function as an effective member of the Living Classrooms team working cohesively to produce quality results.

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

- Job requires bending, lifting, climbing and physical activity in all weather conditions and in tight spaces.

- Job requires an ability to maintain high levels of visual and mental concentration for extended periods of time.

- This position requires positive interaction with the public.

- Must be able to access boats, gangways, ladders, floats, and bilges.

-  Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs.
