Independent Living Coordinator (Screven Office)
Living Independence for Everyone (LIFE), Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to promote independent living and advance community change for EVERYONE.
LIFE is one of nine centers for independent living in Georgia. LIFE advocates personal responsibility – by, and for, people with disabilities – as a means to independence. To help consumers achieve self-sufficiency, LIFE offers comprehensive programs including independent living skills training; information and referral; peer support; advocacy; transition services; and home modification/assistive technology.
We are growing and are looking for a friendly, enthusiastic individual who shares our passion, will help shape our satellite office in Screven, GA and represent LIFE at community meetings. IL Coordinators will frequently travel to consumers in our 9-county expansion area and to partnering agency/organization sites (LIFE reimburses mileage). Initial training/mentoring will be significant, conducted by both existing staff in the Screven office as well as administrative staff in the Savannah office. It will cover everything from service delivery goals to documentation responsibilities to ways to maintain existing community relationships and develop new ones to working as a member of the Screven team and the LIFE team as a whole. The training will position the new employee to be successful in this challenging but rewarding role supporting people with disabilities in the community and help them grow professionally. This is a hybrid position requiring three days a week in the office.
Qualifications
Possess a bachelor’s Degree in the field of study relevant to the provision of Independent Living Services or at least one year of experience in the direct delivery of human services. Personal experience in independent living and/or a personal experience with living with a disability may be substituted for certain education or work requirements
Possess a passion for working with individuals with disabilities to help them achieve their goals.
Possess reliable transportation that allows for travel to counties served by LIFE
Possess a working knowledge of office technology, including computers, digital platforms like Zoom and Teams, and other office equipment inclusive of printers and scanners.
Possess a knowledge of or willingness to learn about adaptive equipment/aids and knowledge of how to secure same
Possess effective oral and written communications skills
Possess a capacity to work with diverse populations
Possess reliable transportation that allows for travel to counties served by LIFE
Possess a working knowledge of and/or interest and willingness to learn about the Independent Living philosophy, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and other disability related laws and regulations
Demonstrate an internally motivated, team-oriented approach and possess strong organizational skills with a capacity for outside-the-box thinking
Possess experience with peer support (preferred)
Possess an ability to network and develop community partnerships to accomplish common goals
Possess a familiarity with the 9 counties covered by LIFE’s Screven office as well as the existing resources therein
Responsibilities
Oversee and direct tasks designed to help individuals with a disability develop and improve necessary skills to either live alone or become more confident at caring for their own needs, through the provision of LIFE’s 5 Core Services, home modifications, and assistive technology.
Help plan and facilitate consumer groups to include peer support, IL skills, and social groups, identifying common interests and engaging potentially interested parties to maximize impact.
Work with contractors to provide home modifications for qualifying consumers, including taking measurements and transmitting information in a timely manner.
Engage different groups, potential service providers and potential consumers encountered in the community, whether through meetings, drop-ins, phone calls or referrals.
Grow the above noted relationships by identifying and researching LIFE consumer needs to develop resources and explore collaborative possibilities.
Attend community meetings representing LIFE, presenting about LIFE when appropriate and bringing ideas discussed back to coworkers.
Remain vigilant of deadlines and resource availability within LIFE’s expansion service area with a specific focus on counties assigned to you to monitor.
Engage in problem-solving efforts and identify different ways to help oneself and others in the workplace focus on developing new work plans, ideas and programs for them to be successful.
Engage in self-care including independently reviewing one’s efforts, supplementing feedback provided through weekly staff meetings and monthly check-ins with administrative staff, to identify barriers one encounters in performing job tasks and manage work allocation and communicate needs (training, work reallocation, vacation needed) in a timely manner.
Work effectively as a member of a team as well as learn to anticipate and address consumer and organizational needs independently.
Input efforts into LIFE’s consumer database (CIL Suite) in a timely manner.
The above-listed essential qualifications and responsibilities are not all-inclusive as other responsibilities may be assigned as necessary. For example, the Independent Living Coordinator will also, from time to time, assist the other Transition Coordinators with nursing home transition efforts and in the presentation of the Students for LIFE curriculum in the schools or help arrange for the deployment of home modifications.

Salary: benefits (presently life insurance and health insurance fully paid by LIFE, SIMPLE IRA plan with employer match of employee contribution up to 3% of salary, and availability of dental insurance and vision insurance at cost to employee) vest at the conclusion of a 90-day trial period
