What are the responsibilities and job description for the Highway Technician 1 position at Logan County Engineer's Office?
As a Highway Technician I, you'll perform a variety of essential tasks, contributing to the safety and efficiency of our roadways.
Under general supervision, you will engage in a wide range of various skilled activities, from manual labor to basic equipment operation, supporting county highway department’s maintenance, improvement, repair, and construction projects. This position offers a dynamic work environment, ensuring a diverse and engaging experience.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Pave, patch, seal, rake, spread cold and hot asphalt mix, and other paving material.
- Install and repair guardrails, culverts, drainage pipes, tiles and other drain structures.
- Cut, trim, and chip trees, brush, and other vegetation.
- Excavate & grade ditches, dig channels
- Direct traffic with signal flags or paddles.
- Operate a dump truck with a snowplow and other attachments.
- Operate basic equipment including skid steer, bobcat, broom tractor, durapatcher, crack sealer, stump cutter, weed whips, woodsman chipper, and hand tools. Hand power equipment includes a chainsaw, and pole saw, plate compactor, buzz bar, and other forestry implements.
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment, including pre-trip inspections.
- Cleans and repairs highways right-of-way’s, mows grass, moves and loads supplies and materials.
- Perform basic labor duties as required.
- Prepare and submit work-related records.
- Serve as "On-Call Personnel" in the rotation cycle as established by the Logan County Engineer during emergencies.
- Performs other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 18 years or older.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Ohio Driver’s License.
- Valid Class A or Class B CDL (or the ability to get one within 6 months).
- Live within a 36-minute commute of our office.
- Pass a background check, drug screen, and license verification.
- Ability to lift 50-100 pounds.
- Fluent in English (speaking, reading, and writing)..
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires the performance of duties in diverse environmental and physical conditions. Candidates must possess the ability to adapt to and perform effectively in the following:
Environmental Conditions:
- Variable Weather: Exposure to extreme temperatures (heat and cold) and inclement weather conditions.
- Exposure to Elements: Potential exposure to gas fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, insects, poison ivy, and pollen.
- Noise and Vibration: Regular exposure to loud noise and vibration.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent lifting, carrying, and moving of heavy objects, with occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
- Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, and sitting.
- Demonstrated manual dexterity and coordination for operating equipment.
- Full neck mobility for the safe operation of dump trucks and heavy equipment.
- Ability to use hands to finger, handle, feel, grip, grab, hold, or carry.
- Ability to walk and stand on both flat and uneven terrain.
- Ability to reach with hands and arms above and below shoulder level.
- Ability to work at extended heights, in precarious places, and on scaffolding.
Safety Considerations:
- Exposure to hazardous environments, including noise, dust, dirt, grease, vibrations, and potential exposure to chemicals.
- Risk of injury from moving equipment, traffic, and slippery surfaces.
- Potential for eye strain during snow plowing operations.
- Risk of electrical shock.
Sensory Requirements:
- Normal vision, including color and depth perception is required for safe equipment operation and situational awareness.
- Adequate hearing is essential for safe operation of equipment and awareness of surrounding traffic.
Physical Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain the physical ability to perform all essential job functions, including those listed above.
- Must be able to work long and irregular hours, including evenings, nights, weekends for weather emergencies (i.e., snow/ice event).
