Job Summary
The Logan County Engineer's Office is hiring enthusiastic and dedicated individuals for Seasonal Highway Worker positions. This entry-level role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the Highway Department, performing a variety of manual labor tasks under close supervision. As a Seasonal Highway Worker, you will develop valuable skills in construction and teamwork, while contributing to essential road maintenance projects.
Duties
- Direct traffic with a signal flag or paddle.
- Perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks, including loading and unloading trucks, moving supplies and materials, digging and backfilling excavations, and removing roadside debris.
- Operate a weed eater to cut back roadside vegetation, trim branches, and remove trees and stumps.
- Assist in the spreading and raking of asphalt mix and other paving materials.
- Assist in chip/seal operations, including raking stone and operating a broom.
- Assist in pavement crack seal operations.
- Prepare and submit work-related records.
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Valid State of Ohio Driver's License.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, other employees, and the public.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts using basic mathematics.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
This position requires the performance of duties in diverse environmental and physical conditions. Candidates must possess the ability to adapt to and perform effectively in the following:
Environmental Conditions:
- Variable Weather: Exposure to extreme temperatures (heat and cold) and inclement weather conditions.
- Exposure to Elements: Potential exposure to gas fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, insects, poison ivy, and pollen.
- Noise and Vibration: Regular exposure to loud noise and vibration.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent lifting, carrying, and moving of heavy objects, with occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
- Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, and sitting.
- Demonstrated manual dexterity and coordination for operating equipment.
- Full neck mobility for the safe operation of vehicles.
- Ability to use hands to finger, handle, feel, grip, grab, hold, or carry.
- Ability to walk and stand on both flat and uneven terrain.
- Ability to reach with hands and arms above and below shoulder level.
- Ability to work at extended heights, in precarious places, and on scaffolding.
Safety Considerations:
- Exposure to hazardous environments, including noise, dust, dirt, grease, vibrations, and potential exposure to chemicals.
- Risk of injury from moving equipment, traffic, and slippery surfaces.
- Risk of electrical shock.
Sensory Requirements:
- Normal vision, including color and depth perception is required for safe vehicle operation and situational awareness.
- Adequate hearing is essential for safe operation of equipment and awareness of surrounding traffic.
Physical Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain the physical ability to perform all essential job functions.
