Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, has been helping animals and people since 1873. Together with our community, we better the lives of animals through justice, prevention, and life-saving care. Our organization cares for thousands of animals each year—saving animals from abuse and suffering, sending homeless pets to new homes, connecting pet owners with resources to keep their pets, and sharing information on how to help animals every day.
The Manager of Leadership and Legacy Giving position is responsible for developing, managing, and soliciting a caseload of major and planned giving donors. The primary objective is to develop long-term relationships built on a firm understanding of donors’ interests, passions, and values.
Essential Job Duties
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred. Professional fundraising certification is a plus. Three or more years of successful experience in fundraising, or in a related field such as financial planning, estate planning, banking, or wealth management. Experience or ability to build strong relationships with donors/customers. Ability to solicit and close gifts/deals a plus. A combination of education and experience will be considered if aligned with the position.
Skills: Must have a high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations with varied internal and external constituencies. Must possess requisite mathematical skills to be able to explain planned gifts to donors. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands while achieving work goals. Proficient in using the most recent versions of computer software applications including word processing, spreadsheets, database management (Raisers Edge preferred), and presentation software. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with a professional demeanor, self-reliance, and resourcefulness.
Physical Demands: Performs work primarily in an office setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to remain in a stationary position during shift and move throughout the building. Performance may also require prolonged periods of repetitive motion. Frequently required to communicate with others. Occasionally required to move excessive weight.

Essential Job Duties
- Qualify, develop, and solicit a caseload of about 150 donors that includes both major gift and planned giving donors
- Manages a portfolio of about 50 - 75 prospects
- Actively develops an understanding of the donor’s interests and passions through phone calls, in-person visits, tours, emails, and other means
- Thoughtfully and strategically solicit caseload donors for significant gifts to increase revenue for the major gift program
- Develop stewardship strategies to inform donors of their impact
- Qualify donors from mid-level pipeline to the major gift level and keep a consistent flow of prospects to develop and solicit. Collaborate with the development team to ensure a smooth transition for the donor.
- Works with the Director of Development to create strategies to cultivate and solicit major gift portfolio
- Manages a prospect portfolio of approximately 50 - 75 prospects
- Adds prospects to caseload as they are identified through the qualification process
- Develops meaningful relationships with prospects through various methods
- Thoughtfully solicit caseload donors, both new and current, and increase committed planned gifts for the organization
- Works with Director or Development to develop strategies to cultivate and solicit caseload donors
- Partner with other gift officers to assist in the closing of planned gifts
- Oversee the Legacy Gifts and Stewardship Specialist and assist in the steward of the Legacy Society to ensure the stability of committed gifts and collaborate on cultivation and solicitation strategies for planned giving prospects
- Sets annual financial and activity goals with the Director of Development
- Completes a specified number of significant actions annually with prospects in portfolio according to assigned definitions of activity.
- In conjunction with the Development Database Consultant, generates program reports for activity and results towards goals and objectives.
- Confidently communicates to donors about how to leave a legacy, understands planned giving and planned giving gift vehicles.
- Engages board members, volunteers, and key staff in the planning, relationship building, and solicitation of individual gifts.
- Remains current on relevant laws, regulations, and techniques through self-study, professional memberships, conferences, and webinars.
- Maintains accurate and thorough records, contact reports, and background data to preserve institutional memory and facilitate programmatic performance evaluation.
- Carry out responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies and applicable state/ federal laws.
- Observe all safety rules and regulations for self and others.
- Perform other duties as requested to meet organizational needs.
