UH: Vascular Access Team (Part-Time, Day Shift)-

The Clinical Nurse C-VAT (Vascular Access Team) demonstrates advanced nursing knowledge applicable to the specialty practice of vascular access nursing. Serves in two large Magnet Recognized tertiary academic medical centers with multiple hospital campuses (University Hospital, East Campus Hospital, Surgical Hospital, Children’s Hospital) and ambulatory departments. Works under the collaborative direction and leadership of a medical director and nursing leadership team. Functions in a fast paced environment and utilizes skilled discretion and independent judgment to prioritize and coordinate procedures based on the needs of the patient population served, established professional practice model (Duffy’s Quality-Caring Model), approved standardized procedure(s), policies, guidelines, registered nurse scope of practice and recommendations outlined by the Intravenous Nurses Society (INS), applicable regulatory standards and requirements. Procedures include, but are not limited to, difficult peripheral IVs (PIVs), placement and/or exchange of peripheral inserted central catheters (PICC), ultrasound-guided midline and extended dwell catheters for difficult access and therapeutic phlebotomy. Educates patients regarding procedure and verifies informed consent is completed prior to procedure. Serves as a role model in patient care delivery methods, communication and documentation. Functions within the expectations of an accomplished professional nurse and meets nursing excellence standards to maintain Magnet Recognition as outlined by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Inspires others in the advancement of evidence into bed-side practice to optimize patient outcomes. Represents nursing as an empowered profession and enthusiastically embraces new knowledge, innovations and improvements in practice to enhance the patient experience and clinical outcomes. Provides a positive influence to facilitate change and optimize patient satisfaction and outcomes. Meets qualifications, licensure, certifications and competencies as defined in the department-specific Plan for Providing Care and the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). Exhibits refined interpersonal skills that portray professionalism and maximize excellence in customer service and safe patient care. Contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population. Performs other duties as needed.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) required. Minimum of two years’ experience in acute care nursing required. New hires into the CN-C position have one year to meet CN-C criteria outlined in the Clinical Advancement Program handbook. The CN-C is eligible to be promoted into the CN-D classification when criteria outlined in the Clinical Advancement Program handbook and job specifications outlined in CN-D job description are met. Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association required. Vascular Access Board Certification preferred.


Substantial knowledge of vascular access principles, standardized procedures, state and federal healthcare regulations and accreditation, performance improvement, quality, patient safety, evidenced-based clinical practice standards, medical staff structure, legal aspects of care, and nursing scope of practice required. Demonstrates advanced competencies in vascular access practice and procedural nursing. Skillfully adapts a variety of clinical settings. Ability to apply theoretical concepts to clinical practice and continually expands knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus vascular access. Demonstrates a high degree of social skills in obtaining cooperation and support from patients, families, physicians, nurses, ancillary and ambulatory staff. Knowledge and application of adult learning principles, management and utilize problem-solving methodologies in a proactive and creative manner. Exhibits professional behavior at all times and works calmly and responds courteously when under pressure. Able to: speak, read and write legibly in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment; perform technical patient care activities; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; lead, supervise, teach and collaborate; accept direction; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; discern temperature variances through touch; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records and written documents necessary to position.
