The Grounds Maintenance Department of the Long Beach Community College District is seeking highly-qualified individuals to be our Grounds Maintenance Worker! We are looking for someone who can perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in the maintenance of grounds, athletic fields and other District landscaped areas. AT-A-GLANCE POSITION INFORMATION 

• Type of position: Full time (40 hours/week)
• Position Status: Permanent
• Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM
• Location: Will support both campuses, but could be located at either the Liberal Arts Campus (LAC) or Trades, Technology, and Community Learning Campus (TTC)
• Salary: Range 22, $4,194.57 - $5,149.61 Monthly
• Eligibility list: Will be valid for 12 months once approved or ratified by the Personnel Commission. We reserve the right to use the established eligibility list for vacancies (permanent and temporary) in this classification as well as related classifications. 
• Advanced salary placement: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. Advanced salary placement may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled duties in the maintenance of grounds, athletic fields and other landscaped areas; installs, repairs and maintains irrigation systems for landscaped areas; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Grounds Maintenance Workers perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in the maintenance of grounds, athletic fields and other District landscaped areas. After orientation, incumbents work independently in maintaining the upkeep, cleanliness, appearance and safety of assigned grounds and facilities.

Grounds Maintenance Worker is distinguished from Skilled Maintenance Worker in that incumbents in the latter class perform more difficult semi-skilled and skilled duties requiring knowledge of building trades methods and practices.

Education, Training and Experience: 

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and two (2) years of grounds maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.   

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: 

A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy.

Selection Process: 

The following examination segments are pass/fail and may be utilized during the selection process:

• screening of the applicant's training, background, and experience
• scored evaluation of responses on a supplemental application/ subject matter expert (SME) review. *** Please answer each question thoroughly as they will be read and scored by SMEs*** 
• in-person or online:
  1. written examination(s)
  2. qualifications appraisal oral examination 
  3. performance examination
  4. technical oral examination (the above will be scored on a job-related basis)

Performance Examination (50%) and Qualifications Appraisal Interview (50%) (in-person only): Week of February 17, 2025
