Job Description:
Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the part-time positions of Boiler Operator / Utility Plant Specialist II (T0189, T0190). The successful candidate will be responsible for the shift operation of the 101,400 lbs./hour heating plant and distribution system to ensure the plant is operated safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all environmental rules and regulations. This position is considered emergency personnel, which requires the selected candidate to report to work or be called in due to inclement weather, an emergency, staff shortage, etc.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Perform routine equipment operating tasks; start-up and secure equipment promptly and properly respond to changing load demand and fuel quality conditions
- Receive delivery of oil, sawdust, and fuel according to procedures and safety precautions
- Operate sawdust handling equipment
- Keep fuel delivery station ready to receive the next load
- Perform administrative functions to maintain the plant log and ensure all shift readings are taken to include water, fuel, and water treatment
- Report to shift supervisor any deficiencies in the plant that may be affecting the performance of equipment or the efficiency of the plant
- Proficiently monitor plant controls using electronic and manual equipment
- Maintain the Heating Plant monthly statistics log
- Develop and read graphs, and interpret data collected
- Complete all assigned maintenance and repair work orders within 24 hours
- Assist with outages for maintenance and repairs of plant equipment
- Assist plant manager with the inventory control of chemicals, spare parts, and fuel
- Maintain the cleanliness of the Heating Plant
- Walk entire facility during shift change to ensure any abnormalities are addressed
- Ensure all standard operating procedures are followed
- Make chemical adjustments to water chemistry if necessary
- Assist customers to ensure their needs are met, if problems arise
- Work assigned shifts, which may include overtime
- Cover for sick or vacationing personnel
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Basic computer knowledge
- Working knowledge in the design and function of utility-related equipment
- Advanced knowledge and skill in the operation and maintenance/repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment
- Valid driver's license required
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills
- Must be able, if necessary, to work extended or irregular hours
- Steam plant operation experience or equivalent boiler experience preferred
- Stationary engineer license preferred
- SCADA experience preferred
