Campus Safety Officer- Sunday overnight position

Loomis Chaffee School is seeking an experienced Campus Safety Officer to join our community. The ideal candidate will have experience working with young people, previous experience working in an academic setting, strong communication skills and must have a valid driver's license with a clean driving history. This is a per diem position, Sunday 11:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m. and opportunities for additional shifts as needed. Shift Differentials available for evenings and weekend shifts.

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Campus Safety officer is responsible for conducting professional, reliable, efficient patrols of the campus buildings and grounds ensuring a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and facilities. Specific duties include:

  • Supervising of dining spaces, athletics spaces and academic spaces on campus to ensure order, safety and efficiency in accordance with health & safety protocols on campus
  • On-call driver to transport students when required may need to be driven to medical appointments and various other approved appointments
  • Assist with setup and breakdown of campus events from as needed
  • Patrol the campus to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, visitors and members of the community.
  • Patrolling the campus on foot and by vehicle to ensure the campus buildings, facilities, grounds, and property are secure and safe by identifying and tending to safety and security related items.
  • Perform general security functions of patrol, observation, and documentation of incidents.
  • Working with Residential Staff, Deans, and other campus personnel to promote collaboration of a safe environment for residential students, day students, visitors, faculty and staff on campus;
  • General knowledge of life safety, fire safety, and security procedures as it pertains to a co-ed boarding school and residential environment.
  • Support the overall Physical Plant efforts to maintain and improve the facilities and grounds and support the overall mission of the Institute.
  • Assist in parking for athletic and other events as required.
  • Available for emergencies and scheduled “off-hour” work as needed; may be subject to call-out for events.
  • Perform other work and additional duties as assigned.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required, Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree desired.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities typically associated with two (2) years as a Security Officer is desired.


Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Previous experience working with young people, preferably adolescents
  • Previous experience working in residential academic settings
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, good judgement, high energy and ability to work as part of a team
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving history
  • Ability to spend extended periods of time walking between locations
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. periodically
  • Demonstrate proper judgment in behavior, speech, and dress in a neat, clean, and appropriate professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain confidentiality, display sensitivity to unique role security plays in a school setting.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, has initiative, and be a self-starter.
  • Demonstrated good organizational/priority management skills, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze situations and information, consider the risks and implications and implement a plan of action.
  • Able to work as a team member and effectively with assigned personnel including faculty, contractors, students.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job including but not limited to walking around campus, climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds or platforms, lifting/carrying heavy objects and working in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to perform duties at night and during inclement weather including rain, snow, extreme heat or cold.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Willingness to perform other work as required by the department and the Physical Plant.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding and/or Testing Required:

  • Must possess a valid Connecticut driver’s license.
  • State of Connecticut certified security officer or ability to obtain the same.
  • EMT or advanced first aid certification, CPR/AED or ability to obtain the same.
  • Pre-employment physical, and background check required.

Working Conditions:

  • Conditions will vary from indoor, outdoor, and field environments in all weather conditions.
  • Have the ability to consistently stand/walk for up to 12hrs per day, frequently and repeatedly bending, twisting, reaching, and kneeling.
  • Must be able to change work schedule as required by the workload, system operational requirements and respond on a 24-hour per day/seven day per week basis.
  • Must be able to work additional hours on short notice (hours including evening, nights, weekends and holidays) in office and field settings through normal and severe weather conditions.
  • Must have a satisfactory work record including good attendance.
