What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Campus Safety position at Loomis Institute?
Loomis Chaffee School is seeking an experienced full-time Director of Campus Safety to oversee overall safety and security of its community members. This person will ensure best practices for a holistic campus safety program, including the establishment of safety and security standards, oversight of security personnel, educational programming for the community, facilitation and coordination of emergency preparedness drills, establishment and implementation of patrol patterns, response procedures, and preventive safety measures to ensure effective and appropriate monitoring of the campus. This person will work closely and collaboratively with Loomis colleagues and representatives from the local community, including first responders, to implement best practices for independent school safety, recognizing the unique physical setting of our campus.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Continually review, assess, and make changes in the overall campus safety program to provide as safe an environment as possible.
- In the first year, assess the campus security officer program and make changes as necessary to ensure professional and effective monitoring of the campus. In subsequent years, oversee the officers’ professional development so that they can continue to be primary players in the safety of the campus.
- Serve on the emergency management team. Review all emergency protocols and revise to be consistent with best practices.
- Oversee campus drills and provide appropriate education for all involved. Ensure compliance with regulations/best practices.
- Build relationships with the Loomis community through outreach and general campus presence to build a sense of community investment in campus safety.
- Build relationships with local police, fire department, and other community organizations.
- Work with staff from Physical Plant and Institutional Technology to develop and implement a program for monitoring and access, including door lock systems and cameras.
- Provide, with the security staff, coverage 24/7 throughout the year. Possess the ability to work on a flexible schedule.
- Ensure record-keeping, evaluations, and protocols are reflective of best practices.
- Prepare, educate, and staff appropriately for major campus events such as graduation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related discipline or Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience in either state or federal law enforcement.
- Three to five years’ experience in campus safety at an independent school or college, or the equivalent; understanding of and appreciation for student issues.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals and groups, both orally and in writing.
- Strong organizational, supervisory, and collaborative skills.
- Certification in AED, CPR, and First Aid or willingness to be certified prior to beginning work.
- Working knowledge of campus safety best practices and compliance regulations; background in emergency management/crisis situations preferred.
- Working knowledge of environmental protocols in compliance and response.
- Working knowledge of fire and emergency response and safety systems.
