What You Will Do

The Electrochemistry and Corrosion Team is seeking postdoctoral candidates to work on a range of fundamental and applied research projects focusing on electrodeposition. You will be an integral member of a team tackling a variety of electrochemistry challenges supporting national security. Research opportunities include electrolyte development from non traditional electrolytes (crowded solvents, water-in-salt electrolytes, organic solvents} for both electrodeposition and/or electropolishing. Interest in high-throughput system development and materials informatics to accelerate materials discovery is a plus. Specific project goals will stem from the candidate's interest, the mission needs within the team, and the availability of funding.

A postdoctoral researcher is expected to help guide the overall technical direction of their project(s} with their mentor. Candidates should be capable of conducting independent research in small teams and be able to communicate their findings in such a way that enables future application. The position will also require working with potentially toxic and radioactive materials.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated strong background in fundamental and/or applied electrochemistry.
  • Hands on physical research experience, especially in the areas of electrochemistry, corrosion science, and surface characterization techniques.
  • Ability to work successfully in a complex regulatory environment and complex experimental facility.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral} as demonstrated by experience presenting research results at technical conferences and authoring peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Experience in statistical experimental design, execution, and analysis
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment.
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance which normally requires U.S. Citizenship

Education/Experience: Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field completed within the last five years, or soon to be completed, is required.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Self-motivated and independent researcher who has demonstrated experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Familiarity with SEM, XRD, NMR, Raman, and other materials characterization techniques.
  • Some experience with materials informatics, image processing, and/or high-throughput experimentation is a plus.
  • Experience with COMSOL modelling and/or FEA is a plus.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
