What You Will Do

The RadGeochemistry team at Los Alamos National Laboratory invites applications for Post Masters Student positions. The positions support projects focused on the study of actinide transport in the environment, high temperature thermodynamics of aqueous and solid species / minerals containing actinides or critical metals, development of models for natural critical material ore formation and critical material extraction technologies, development of technologies for in situ mining, collecting data required for safety assessment of nuclear waste repositories, and national security-related projects.

You will be joining a diverse, multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers working at the forefront of problems related to energy and national security. You will provide technical support for research projects in these fields. Tasks will include performing hands-on experiments with nuclear materials; testing and development of experimental protocols; collecting data using in-house designed experimental systems; data analyses and data management; and assisting with technical reports. Los Alamos National Laboratory solves problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns, and enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements :

  • Basic skills for safe operation in chemical and experimental laboratories
  • Willingness to learn the basics of spectroscopic techniques and development of custom experimental tools
  • Strong technical communication skills, as demonstrated by technical presentations, reports, thesis, and / or scientific publications
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a large and diverse interdisciplinary research team

Desired Qualifications :

  • Experience with spectroscopy techniques such as absorbance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, or IR spectroscopy
  • Experience with basic characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, ICP-MS, Chromatography, X-ray diffraction, etc.)
  • Experience with high temperature hydrothermal experimental techniques
  • Experience with geochemical modeling such as PHREEQC, Geochemists Workbench, or MINTEQ
  • Experience with data management and processing
  • Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Education / Experience : We are looking to hire someone with a Master's degree in a STEM field that has been completed within the past 3 years, who has not yet been accepted into another master's program or a PhD program

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.     No Clearance : Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

    New-Employment Drug Test : The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
