The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) announces an opening for a full-time, tenure-track Dual Enrollment Counselor at Los Angeles Southwest College beginning the Spring 2025 . This is D Basis 12 month position. Interested individuals who possess the required training and experience are invited to submit an application for the position.

LASC History :

A 20 year vision became a reality for a dedicated group of residents in February 1967 when the Los Angeles Board of Education approved plans to build a community college at the corner of Western Avenue and Imperial Highway in Los Angeles. On September 11, 1967, Los Angeles Southwest College (LASC) officially opened its doors with 600 students and 22 full-time faculty members. Since then, LASC has established itself as an educational and cultural hub of the southern part of Los Angeles and surrounding communities. In addition to classroom instruction, students are exposed to a myriad of learning experiences to broaden their horizons, to expand their options and alternatives, to develop an appreciation for the academic work ethic, and to understand intellectual pursuits. LASC graduates are among the most successful - ranging from medical professionals and professional athletes to recording artists and educators. Currently, LASC term enrollment is approximately 4,500. As the college develops new partnerships with local schools and community agencies, we continue to place at the highest priority, student learning, achievement, and academic excellence.

Job Description :

LASC is seeking a full-time Dual Enroll Counselor to provide comprehensive, academic and vocational counseling services to students participating in its Dual Enrollment program. The Counselor will assist the Dual Enrollment Coordinator in outreach and recruitment efforts, participating in Dual Enrollment program activities and leadership meetings, as well as in the planning / evaluation / reporting processes for the Dual Enrollment program. The Dual Enrollment program provides support services to K-12 students through pre-enrollment activities, retention services, and academic support. These services are provided by the Dual Enrollment Counselor through individual and group counseling and advisement, and workshops. This counseling position may require evening and some possible weekend hours; and travel to K-12 institutions.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Provide K-12 students with counseling, career development, and assessment for individuals or groups, as well as, academic advising and enrollment, with regard to the College's academic, occupational and vocational programs, and programs which prepare K-12 students to achieve certificates, degrees, or employment.
  • Coordinate programs or activities and workshops that will enhance K-12 student success.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff and students.
  • Develop strategies, resources, and materials for counseling K-12 students in a multicultural environment to promote their personal development and academic success.
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline.
  • Participate in program planning and staff development.
  • Participate in shared governance committees (Academic Senate, Accreditation, etc.).
  • Minimum Qualifications :

  • Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;
  • OR the equivalent,
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff, and students.
  • NOTE : A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

    Desirable Qualifications :

  • A strong commitment to student equity and student success.
  • Minimum of one year of recent counseling experience (within the past three years) in a community college setting that highlights a strong commitment to counseling students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience working with K-12 students.
  • Knowledge and experience with A-G requirements.
  • Experience in academic / transfer and career / vocational counseling.
  • Experience teaching personal development, study skills and career planning.
  • Knowledge of the use of Canvas, PeopleSoft, the Microsoft suite and other technology that may be used to assist students in reaching their career and educational goals.
  • Experience in planning, overseeing, and conducting workshops and orientations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and work collegially within the students, faculty and staff.
  • Salary and Benefits : The starting salary ranges from $91,716 to $174,432 for the 12-month academic year, depending on experience and professional preparation. The doctoral differential is $5,652 per academic year. An excellent benefit package that includes medical, vision, dental and life insurance is available for the employee and eligible dependents.
