Coordinator, Public Programs (Girls in STEM)

The Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) include the Natural History Museum in  Exposition Park, La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park, and the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall. The NHMLAC is seeking a Coordinator, Public Programs (Girls in STEM) for our Education & Programs department.  The Coordinator, Public Programs (Girls in STEM) will assist in developing and implementing the Girls in STEM programs. The Girls in STEM programs are grant-funded and include a Girls in STEM Day and the Girls in STEM Teen Club at La Brea Tar Pits and Museum. Specific responsibilities include supporting the team with program coordination, office support, scheduling, and program facilitation. This position is full-time, temporary, ending a year from hire.  


Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: 

  1. Supports program planning and implementation for Girls in STEM programming. 

    1. Works with the Public Programs Team and other NHMLAC staff to support in the development and implementation of the Girls in STEM programs, which include the Girls in STEM Day and the Girls in STEM Teen Program  

    2. Supports gathering content updates to web pages and social media related to the Girls in STEM programs with the Public Programs Team and the Marketing and Communications Team

    3. Tracks data/metrics of Girls in STEM program participation for future reporting  

    4. Co-facilitates evaluation efforts for the Girls in STEM programs with the Public Programs team

    5. Purchases supplies and works with vendors to obtain program supplies for the Girls in STEM programs

  2. Oversees office logistics in support of the Girls in STEM programs

    1. Schedules meetings, takes notes, creates timelines and deadlines, follows up on action items, writes reports & coordinates with program calendars

    2. Provides additional administrative support as needed to the Public Programs Team 

  3. Co-facilitates the Girls in STEM Teen program along with the Public Programs team

    1. Works with the Public Programs team to facilitate the instruction of the Girls in STEM Teen Club

    2. Co-creates daily instruction and activities for participants of the Girls in STEM Club alongside the Public Program team 

    3. Oversees youth participating in the program along with the Public Programs team

  4. Supports the production of the Girls in STEM Day

  5. Supports the documentation of the Girls in STEM programs 

    1. Supports the Public Programs team in creating program reports that may include photographs, participant questionnaires, and future recommendations

  6. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Director, Public Programs dependent on organizational needs.


This position has the following requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, History, Natural Sciences, Child Development, or Liberal Studies  preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience, formal or informal curriculum training and facilitation experience preferred. 

  • A personal vehicle, a valid California Driver's License, and personal automobile liability insurance to drive to offsite meeting locations. 

  • Must be welcoming and personable and can interact effectively with children of all ages, their families, clients, staff, and other Museum visitors.

  • Must have reliable transportation to be punctual and dependable in the care of children.

  • Must have a reliable computer and secure internet connection. Familiarity with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and Canva preferred. 

  • Ability to plan and lead games and activities for middle school children.

  • Ability to relate to and communicate efficiently and effectively with children and adults.

  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate ideas verbally and in writing.

  • Fluency in a second language, ideally Spanish or Korean, is preferred.

  • Previous experience with youth programs (especially teenagers) or another informal learning environment with children and a general interest in natural history is required.

  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as required.

The NHMLAC is seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience and commitment to working with a diverse community. The hourly rate for this position is $24.00 hourly  and includes excellent benefits. This is a Part-Time Temporary, non-exempt position. This is a temporary position for the duration of 1 year.
