SUPERVISING ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN I
LOCATION:
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT, OPERATIONS AND ENGINEERING SECTION, VARIOUS
The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County are seeking a qualified and motivated individual to join our Solid Waste Management Department as a Supervising Engineering Technician I. This role provides a unique opportunity to oversee and support critical field operations at one of several landfill sites, with the current vacancy located at the Scholl Canyon Landfill in eastern Glendale in Los Angeles County. The selected candidate will lead a team of engineering technicians engaged in environmental monitoring and field support activities that ensure compliance, efficiency, and safety in landfill operations. - The current vacancy is at Scholl Canyon Landfill.
- The list of eligible candidates resulting from this posting may be used to fill any additional vacancies that may occur in the next six months at Calabasas Landfill, Palos Verdes Landfill, Puente Hills, Scholl Canyon Landfill, or Spadra Landfill.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To provide direct supervision over the work of field engineering technicians engaged in a variety of Engineering and Field Operations support activities.
JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of a Supervising Engineering Technician II or higher, incumbents will:
- Plan, organize, assign, coordinate and evaluate the work of a crew of engineering technicians performing flow measurement, industrial waste monitoring, water quality sampling and monitoring, gas collection system monitoring, other landfill monitoring, or specialized office engineering duties
- Perform, check, and verify complex calculations
- Oversee and ensure completion of projects in the interest of efficiency, technical adequacy and safety
- Prepare operational status reports
- Specify and review work procedures
Maintain compliance with AQMD and other regulations.
- Train, evaluate and participate in personnel-related actions involving subordinates
- Verify and input data into a desktop computer
- Provide technical assistance participating in the work of a field crew
- Interpret technical manuals and regulations to subordinates
Applicants must possess:
- A valid California Class C driver license
- One of the following:
- Option A: Status as a Senior Engineering Technician with the County Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County
- Option B: Two (2) years of technical experience performing engineering support work directly related to environmental projects or programs
The competitive selection process may cover:
Knowledge of:
- Principles of supervision and training
- Principles of field monitoring and sampling procedures and equipment
- Technical report preparation
- Technically sophisticated and complex computer software and statistical packages
- Basic chemistry
- Technical math calculations
- Purchasing procedures
Ability to:
- Supervise and evaluate the work of engineering technicians
- Perform complex mathematical calculations
- Use a computer and relevant software programs to enter data and prepare technical reports
- Prepare and interpret maps, graphs, and charts
- Evaluate sophisticated sampling and/or monitoring equipment
- Read design plans, specifications and maps
SELECTION PROCESS:
- All applications will be reviewed to determine if the conditions and qualifications for testing are met.
- The selection process will consist of a written test which will be weighted at 50% and an interview weighted at 50%.
- Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process.
- The written exam is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, May 7.
- The interview is tentatively scheduled for the week of May 12.
