INFORMATION ON SCHOOL SITE(S):
The Los Angeles Unified School District seeks an outstanding Assistant Principal, Secondary Counseling Services (APSCS) to collaborate with the principal to lead the students, staff, and community at Van Nuys Middle School towards academic excellence and success.
Van Nuys Middle School (VNMS), established in 1915, serves approximately 800 students in grades 6-8. Located in a quiet Sherman Oaks neighborhood, VNMS fosters academic growth, emotional literacy, and citizenship. Our STEAM Magnet prepares students for success in STEAM fields through project-based learning and leadership development. The Valley Environmental Academy (VEA) emphasizes environmental research, awareness, and presentation skills, while our yoga program supports a healthy school-life balance.
Our diverse student body includes 92% who are economically disadvantaged, 85% Latino, 4% African American/BSAP, 17% English Learners, 18% with IEPs, and 30% identified as GATE. As a School-Wide Title I Program, we are committed to equity and excellence.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
will have a strong instructional and counseling background with a comprehensive understanding of A-G requirements. The candidate should have proven experience in the development and timely creation of a Master Schedule, demonstrating the ability to work collaboratively with the Counseling Department to engage in a meaningful PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) cycle for continuous improvement.
Key qualifications include experience in using data to coordinate the identification, strategic placement, and reporting of various programs, such as Honors, Gifted, Special Education, and English Learners. Knowledge of IEP processes and the principles and practices of counseling and guidance is essential. The candidate should also possess expertise in Restorative Justice and Trauma-Informed Practices, with the ability to design and implement multiple, differentiated learning opportunities to meet the academic, social, emotional, psychological, and physical needs of students.
Additionally, experience in supervising and evaluating personnel is required, alongside the ability to work effectively with staff, parents, and community agencies. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable.
SALARY:
SALARY: 40G - B Basis ($116,751 – $145,407) – 221 paid days
- For employees who change basis during the school year, this basis change may prevent them from earning a full year of service credit.
- For an annualized employee who is changing basis during the year, this change may result in an annualized “settlement” (i.e., the process by which the District resolves an under or overpayment).
- Selected individual may be subject to displacement due to norm allocation and seniority based RIF provisions or due to budget limitations.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE (PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING):
- Five years of successful full-time public school district certificated service
- A minimum of three years of experience as a teacher in a K-12 program
- No fewer than two years of successful experience in a middle/senior high school counseling office
Employees who have been issued a below-standard Performance Evaluation, or Notice of Unsatisfactory Act(s) and/or Suspension, shall be ineligible for application to any promotion process for one calendar year following the issuance of such a Notice.

- A valid California teaching credential requiring a Bachelor's degree and a program of professional preparation, including student teaching
- A valid California Administrative Services Credential • Multicultural coursework*
- A valid Pupil Personnel Services Credential
- Master’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university • District Master Plan requirements*
- Candidates have one year to complete this requirement
For all school based administrative positions, candidates must be in the appropriate LAUSD eligible pool for the position or currently serving in the class for which they are applying. In order to be placed in the eligible pool, candidates must successfully complete the appropriate LAUSD Aspiring Administrator Program. Qualified applicants not in an eligible pool from within or outside LAUSD may be considered if fewer than five applicants from the eligible pool apply for the position.
