POSITION DESCRIPTION
Class Title : Cafeteria Assistant
Basic Function :
Under supervision, to assist in preparing and serving food; to collect money from cafeteria meals; and to perform all related duties as assigned.
Examples of Duties :
Cleans, cuts, peels and prepares fruits, vegetables, and other foods for cooking.
Assists in preparing main dishes, salads, fruit, and sandwiches.
Prepares bread, rolls, cookies, cakes, and other baked goods.
Portions, carries, and positions bulk quantities of food or ingredients.
Serves students and staff.
Loads and operates dishwasher.
Cleans ovens and mechanical equipment.
Washes pots, pans, and kitchen utensils and areas.
Wipes tables and maintains cafeteria areas in a clean and sanitary condition.
Stores food.
Collects money and makes change.
Prepares daily records of food and milk sales.
Operates a variety of standard kitchen utensils and appliances such as stoves, dishwasher, mixers, milkshake machines, and can openers.
May coordinate activities of student helpers.
Performs all related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities :
Knowledge of :
Basic methods and materials used in the preparation and serving of food.
Methods of cleaning and preparing vegetables, fruits, and other food for cooking.
Basic food serving utensils and equipment.
Kitchen cleaning materials, methods, and hygienic practices.
Standard kitchen appliances.
Sanitation and safety measures in food service areas.
Routine inventory record keeping and ordering.
Ability to :
Lift and transport quantities of food or ingredients.
Work efficiently during rush conditions.
Count, add, subtract, and tally series of numbers.
Handle money and make change.
Follow applicable health and sanitation requirements.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience :
No specific training and experience is required, but some experience in food preparation, kitchen maintenance, and operation of a cash register is preferred.

Subject to heat from ovens.
Physical Demands :
Standing for extended periods of time.
Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy food trays, carts, materials and supplies.
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
