Loudoun County's Zoning Administration Division of the Department of Planning and Zoning is seeking a Deputy Zoning Administrator. This position will serve as an assistant to the Zoning Administrator and will be primarily responsible for leading a team of professional planners that are responsible for preparing zoning interpretations/determinations, reviewing legislative and administrative land development applications for conformance with the Zoning Ordinance, processing Zoning Ordinance amendments, and providing support to the Board of Zoning Appeals. The successful candidate must have comprehensive knowledge of the theory, principles, practices and techniques of Zoning and Planning administration; comprehensive knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances; excellent verbal and presentation skills; ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely and effectively; ability to negotiate sensitive issues, analyze conflicts and facilitate resolutions; and the ability to interface with County Attorney’s office, Board of Supervisors, County Administration, and community groups.
Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.
Master's degree in Planning, Public Administration, Urban Studies, Public Policy, Business Administration, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, or a related field; four (4 years of related work experience in planning and/or zoning including two (2) years of supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certification and Certified Zoning Administrator (CZA) preferred. Knowledge/experience in GIS desirable. The successful candidate should have solid Zoning experience in the public sector or comparable operation, leadership and management skills with well-developed communication and interpersonal skills. This position requires a valid driver’s license, driving record and criminal background check. After an initial training period, telework 2 days a week is an option. Relocation assistance is available to successful candidates who live more than forty (40) miles away.
The ability to effectively work with and develop positive relationships with different community and industry groups, elected and appointed officials, the media and others is required. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to mentor staff and provide guidance on public staff reports, technical recommendations and presentations. Speaking at regular evening hearings and public work sessions is required.
