Description:
The Louisiana Motor Transport Association (LMTA) Associate Director is seeking a self-motivated and well-organized intern interested in working and growing skills in Mass Communications. The Communications Assistant will work on tasks under the guidance of the LMTA Associate Director and the association’s Executive Director. Responsibilities include assisting in driving the association’s communication strategy and helping with managing social media platforms to help the association gain earned media.
Candidates must possess superior verbal and written communication skills and a willingness to assist in planning, organizing, and executing public and social media plans. Candidates must demonstrate strong critical and creative thinking skills to effectively problem-solve to execute on assigned projects. An interest or background in political science or public relations is also highly desired.
The candidate will be expected to work independently and efficiently on projects assigned to them and collectively with the LMTA team. Student Assistants may work up to 25 hours per week with flexible scheduling options. While a majority of this job may be done remotely, there is a requirement to coordinate coming to the association's office in downtown Baton Rouge on a regular basis.
Responsibilities:
- COMMUNICATIONS:
- Work with Associate and Executive Directors on ideas and communication plans to help the association gain earned media.
- Participate in brainstorming and planning sessions, taking notes, and formulating communication plans.
- Help plan and drive different communication strategies with staff for the association’s political and policy objectives.
- Create strategy timelines for self and other staff to push campaigns.
- Organize and execute events and campaigns based on set communication strategy timelines.
- Create and revise social media content for the association and its other entities.
- Create and keep calendars (editorial, press conferences, events etc.) and media lists aligned with communications plans.
- Conduct research to support press relation planning.
- Create and maintain metrics for tracking media or online coverage.
- Invent ways to streamline communication and plan execution
- SOCIAL MEDIA:
- Assist with the planning, design and execution of social media campaigns for the Louisiana Motor Transport Association (LMTA) and LMTA Foundation
- Create weekly and monthly editorial calendars to promote association’s events, opportunities and programs on various social media platforms
- Manage and post a healthy volume of social media posts and related content to help grow and engage audience
- Track social media engagement to identify high-performing ideas, topics and campaigns
- ASSOCIATION DATA MANAGEMENT:
- Updating members contacts using the association’s database
- Contacting members to update membership information for directory
- Creating lists and tags in association’s database based on association’s committees, councils & groups
- Generating membership reports from the database using Excel
- Generate meeting minutes and records from association meetings or meeting recordings
- Pack and ship new member boxes and renewal packets to membership around the state.
- OTHER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with association event planning, organization and staffing as needed
- Work on additional projects as assigned
- Answer office phone calls and forward to appropriate staff
- Provide clerical support, proofreading, photocopying, electronic filing, etc.
- Prioritize responsibilities to meet deadlines with successful completion of work
- Maintain confidentiality, reliability and communicate changes in work schedule in advance
Requirements:
- Pursuing a degree in Mass Communications, Political Communication, Press Relations, or a related field
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Especially Outlook, Work and Excel)
- Willingness to learn or grow skills in strategic planning, political communication, social media management, content and calendar creation, email communication as well as learn how to use and correct information in association’s database
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a thorough understanding of communication principles and practices
- Multi-tasking and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
- Ability to work as a part of our small, but close team
- Ability to coordinate coming to the association's office in downtown Baton Rouge on a regular basis.
Desired Skills:
- Knowledge of trade association practices, structure and culture
- Familiarity with Louisiana political or business communities
- Capability to understand and learn AP Style guidelines
- Ability to work with Mac, PC, Apple and Android operating systems
- Background working with Dropbox is a plus
Job Types: Part-time, Internship, Contract
Pay: $12.00 - $18.00 per hour
