The Lower East Side Partnership (LESP) is a not-for-profit business improvement district (BID) serving the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The Partnership’s mission is to enhance the unique and diverse character of the neighborhood by improving overall quality of life and support the continued growth and vitality of the local economy.

LESP provides a comprehensive suite of neighborhood services, such as marketing, events, public space enhancements, sanitation, and public realm management that are designed to aid in the creation of a thriving community for our merchants, property owners, and residents. Additionally, LESP is the community partner for Essex Market, and provides programming and promotional support to the anchor neighborhood institution.

Job Responsibilities

Community Planning & Development

  • Develop and implement a community outreach plan that connects stakeholders to BID services and expansion efforts, including strategies, such as door-to-door outreach and in-person programming;
  • Maintain records of all merchants and property owners district-wide managing relationships and internally tracking service delivery requests;
  • Attend community board meetings, and other community meetings as needed; to better understand local concerns and get to know stakeholders;
  • Manage public realm design and planning initiatives, and;
  • Create district maps, reports and presentations to communicate daily work effort and strategic goals.

Support Services Contract & Grant Management

  • Supervise contracted sanitation partner responsible for neighborhood operations inclusive of clean streets and public space maintenance;
  • Monitor budgets for equipment and services, including ensuring monthly invoices are billed correctly;
  • Direct a quality control program to ensure our partners are delivering on the requirements of their contracts;
  • Take ownership of district conditions and manage detailed metrics for service audits and all organizational reporting;
  • Oversee the annual development, implementation and success of our horticulture program to beautify and activate public space, and;
  • Manage grant applications and agreements with city agencies and programmatic partners to sustain and grow initiatives such as, but not limited to, Open Streets.
  • Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to think critically in diverse situations;
  • Detail oriented with capacity to use and enhance existing systems to organize district data;
  • Experience with monitoring budgets as well as reviewing and processing invoices;
  • Degree in Community Development, Urban Planning, Public Policy, or equivalent field of study preferred;
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and related softwares;
  • Ability to selectively work on evenings and weekends when needed;
  • A Driver's License and clean driving record;
  • Ability to carry or move 40lbs, and;
  • Familiarity with arcGIS, AutoCAD, and / or other special design softwares preferred.
