Under the general direction of the District and County Court at Law Judges, a judicial officer appointed under Texas Family Code § 201.001 who assists the Lubbock County District Courts and County Courts at Law in handling proceedings that are referred; serves the Courts by hearing motions to modify child support, motions to modify visitation orders, motions for temporary restraining orders and motions for temporary orders in suits for divorce or annulment, motions for temporary restraining orders and motions for temporary orders in suits affecting the parent-child relationship, a family code habeas corpus proceeding, motions to enforce child support, hearings requested pursuant to Title 4 of the Texas Family Code, hearings required by Chapter 262 and 263 of the Texas Family Code, motions to transfer, withdraw, and/or dismiss in family law cases, or any other matter referred to the associate judge by the presiding judge.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Presides over ancillary judicial hearings referred to the Associate Judge in family law matters.With the agreement of the parties, presides over final divorce hearings.Conducts legal research necessary to carry out the duties assigned.Follows changes in family law statutes and ensures Lubbock County Local Rules and policies adhere to the law.Provides daily supervision to staff appointed to serve the Associate Judge.Works with judges and branches of government to improve the administration of justice. Attends continuing legal education programs as required by law and by rule. Participates in public appearances before school, civic groups, and general public which are incidental to appointed office.Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the principles of general administration and management; extensive knowledge of civil and family court rules and procedures; specific knowledge of the constitutional, statutory and case law applicable to this position, the Texas Rules of Evidence, Lubbock County Local Rules, Rules of Judicial Administration, and Code of Judicial Conduct; considerable knowledge of court case management; other required skills include: effective communication (both orally and in writing), computer proficiency; the ability to quickly analyze law, apply facts and come to a conclusion; the ability to work accurately and rapidly; the ability to deal with the public in large volume and carry out the organizational objectives of the Lubbock County Court system; ability to handle high stress situations with acceptable judicial temperament, ability to supervise others, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, co-workers, County employees, Department Heads, Elected/Appointed Officials, outside organizations, attorneys, the news media and the general public.PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical requirements include lifting/carrying 10lbs. occasionally; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard and basic office equipment.
