Job Summary
Lumos Diagnostics is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to play a key role in the design, development, and prototyping of innovative point-of-care diagnostic solutions. This on-site role offers hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, working across internal projects and strategic partnerships.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and third-party partners to develop high-performance, manufacturable, and regulatory-compliant products. Your focus will include Lumos’s proprietary technologies in point-of-care readers, mobile applications, and diagnostic test cartridges, while also integrating partner platforms as needed.
The ideal candidate has mechanical and/or systems engineering experience in medical devices or in vitro diagnostics, with strong problem-solving skills and a hands-on approach to prototyping and testing. A commitment to excellence, teamwork, and innovation is essential.
Compensation & Benefits
In the spirit of pay transparency, we are excited to share that the salary range for this position is $112,000 to $130,000.00 annually. Your final compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, experience, and qualifications. What You’ll Do
- Execute mechanical and systems engineering efforts for diagnostic product development projects, across all phases – from concept to manufacturing.
- Work closely with internal and external team members, contributing to defining project direction and directly supporting mechanical/systems engineering tasks.
- Develop, review, modify, and release technical documentation including mechanical drawings, schematics, bill of materials, and inspection procedures.
- Create, review and modify 2D and 3D parts and assembly drawings.
- Perform hands-on design work, including prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting issues in real-time.
- Work closely with 3rd party tool makers/injection molders to ensure device parts are of high quality and fit for purpose.
- Actively contribute to prototype fabrication and testing efforts, collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Support manufacturing teams in resolving mechanical design issues, ensuring smooth production workflows.
- Participate in team meetings, present designs, technical results, recommendations, and plans for future activities.
- Continuously improve and optimize mechanical designs to enhance performance, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability.
- Perform other hands-on engineering tasks as required, commensurate with skills and experience.
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented engineer who thrives in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have:
- Minimum of 2–5 years of professional experience in mechanical and/or systems engineering, particularly in medical or in vitro diagnostic device product development.
- Proven expertise in practical product development, including concept design, prototyping, and manufacturing.
- Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacturability (DFM), particularly in injection molding.
- Proficient in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
- Experience working directly with mechanical components, test fixtures, and prototype assembly.
- Strong analytical skills, creative problem-solving, and detail-oriented.
- Familiarity with regulatory test standards.
- Demonstrates a hands-on, problem-solving mindset and willingness to work directly with mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with Quality Management Systems (e.g., ISO 13485) and FDA regulatory requirements.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts in layperson's terms.

- Travel: May require domestic and international travel up to once per quarter.
