Nursery Research Consultant

Brief Description

We are seeking an experienced Nursery Research Consultant to provide supervision to rice variety development and seed production.

This consulting role offers flexible hours and the opportunity to apply supervisor and communication skills in implementing rice breeding program, seed production program, and organic research.

Key Responsibilities

• Work with the Nursery Manager and Nursery Team to implement the Nursery Breeding Program.
• Assist in Implementing the breeding, propagation, and rice seed programs. Supervise preparation of field books, progeny row notes, and seed inventory for breeding lines.
• Participate in milling tests, cooking tests, and data analysis for rice and other crop trials.
• Support greenhouse and field trials for additional crops, ensuring accurate data collection and results.
• Supervise seed preparation, planning, planting, maintenance, and harvest of breeder and foundation seed.
• Ensure compliance with California Crop Improvement Association (CCIA) standards and coordinate field inspections.
• Supervise inspection, rogueing, and recording of seed contaminants and off-types.
• Clean, organize, and maintain headrow seed inventory records.
  
  

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in agriculture or biological sciences.
• 5 years of experience in rice agriculture, with a strong background in plant breeding and field research.
• 3 years of supervisory experience in agricultural research or seed production.
• Proven ability to manage complex breeding programs and ensure compliance with industry standards.
• Strong leadership and analytical skills.
• Excellent recordkeeping and data analysis capabilities.
