Nursery Research Supervisor

Brief Description

We are seeking a Nursery Research Supervisor to supervise the rice breeding staff and seed production staff.

This full-time position involves implementing day-to-day nursery operations, ensuring certified seed production, and supporting field crop research projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement the Nursery Breeding Program under the direction of the Nursery Manager.
• Participate in rice breeding, propagation, and full-cycle seed production for variety development.
• Participate in maintaining field books, progeny row notes, and seed inventory.
• Support greenhouse and field trials for additional crops, ensuring accurate data collection.
• Participate in milling tests, cooking tests, and data analysis for rice and other crop trials.
• Supervise team members in seed preparation, planning, planting, maintenance, and harvest of breeder and foundation seed.
• Ensure compliance with California Crop Improvement Association (CCIA) standards and coordinate field inspections.
• Oversee inspection, rogueing, and recording of seed contaminants and off-types.
• Participate in maintaining headrow seed inventory records.
  
  

Additional Responsibilities

• Lead and train casual employees for nursery planting, rogueing, and harvesting.
• Coach and develop staff by fostering an environment that encourages innovation and professional growth.
• Promote a culture of collaboration where team members feel heard and understand their individual responsibilities and deadlines.
  
  

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in agriculture or biological sciences.
• 2 years of experience in rice agriculture; experience or training in plant breeding and field research preferred.
• 1 year of supervisory experience (can be formal or informal).
• Attention to detail with experience managing complex data sets.
• Ability to work effectively in both field and greenhouse environments.
• Solid recordkeeping and data analysis capabilities.
