Camp Grows Camp Counselor
Part-time: Various hours
Seasonal: June 2 - July 3 2025
-Week 1 (June 2-6): 10 hours
-Weeks 2-4 (June 9-27): 40 hours/week
-Week 5 (June 30-July 3): 10 hours
Compensation: $15/hour
Reports To: Camp Director
Summary
The Camp Grows Counselor creates an engaging and safe environment for campers while leading recreational activities and outdoor experiences. This dynamic role combines mentorship with activity leadership, requiring counselors to actively guide and supervise camper groups while fostering positive social interactions. Counselors serve as role models, demonstrating leadership through their actions and helping each camper build confidence, develop new skills, and create lasting summer memories. They maintain camp safety through consistent rule enforcement and attentive supervision while cultivating an atmosphere of encouragement, support, and fun.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise daily camp activities including games, food preparation, reading, arts and crafts, farm work, and outdoor activities
- Ensure camper safety through constant supervision and adherence to camp protocols
- Create an inclusive, supportive environment that promotes group unity and individual growth
- Model positive behavior and respect for facilities, the outdoors, and farm operations
- Maintain organized activity areas and proper care of supplies/equipment
- Communicate effectively with camp leadership about supplies, incidents, or concerns
- Attend all required training sessions and staff meetings
- Collaborate positively with all staff members, including staff with disabilities
Qualifications
- Must be at least 17 years old
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with children of diverse ages and backgrounds
- Demonstrated leadership ability and decision-making skills
- Patience, adaptability, and emotional intelligence
- Ability to enforce rules with kindness and respect
- CPR and First Aid certification (must be obtained within 30 days of hire)
Work Environment
As an urban farm, Lynchburg Grows offers a unique setting that combines greenhouses and outdoor areas. Summer temperatures in our greenhouses can fluctuate dramatically, ranging from 50 to 120 degrees throughout the day. Camp Counselors must come prepared for these variable conditions by wearing appropriate clothing for farm work and weather conditions, using sun protection and insect repellent, and bringing adequate food and water for the day. Counselors are expected to model resilience and enthusiasm for our campers, helping them learn to work comfortably and safely in an active farm environment while maintaining a positive attitude and professional demeanor despite challenging weather conditions.
