Position Description:

The OSP Fiber Splicer will be responsible for performing fiber optic splicing, terminations, and testing to install and maintain our fiber optic network in outdoor environments to include aerial lines, underground cables and cabinets. This role involves working with specialized equipment, adhering to safety and quality standards, and collaborating with other team members to complete projects efficiently. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of fiber optics, excellent technical skills, and a commitment to precision and quality. Responsibilities will also include splicing design, ability to prepare and read splicing plans, perform the splicing activity, termination and testing of fiber optic plant. This individual should feel comfortable working in a fast-paced environment committed to ensuring that Lyte provides exceptional experience for both the communities we work in and the service we provide to a rapidly growing customer base.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform precise fusion splicing of fiber optic cables, ensuring low insertion loss and maintaining signal integrity. Utilize specialized equipment and tools to create permanent and reliable splices.
  • Prepare fiber optic cables for splicing by stripping, cleaning, cleaving, and organizing fibers according to industry standards
  • Use OTDR, power meters, and fusion machines to test splice quality, identify faults, and certify network performance.
  • Inspect, diagnose and resolve fiber optic network issues, including cable damage, poor connections, and signal degradation.
  • Maintain accurate records of splicing activities, including splice locations, cable details, and test results.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in hazardous environments.
  • May be required at times to route, pull and install fiber optic cables.
  • Respond to emergency situations promptly, working efficiently to repair and restore damaged fiber optic cables and network infrastructure. Participate in oncall rotation schedule for nights and weekends
  • Ensure that work areas, tools, equipment and vehicles are safe, clean, and organized.
  • Work closely with other technicians, engineers, and project managers to complete installations and repairs. Communicate effectively to coordinate tasks and address any projectrelated issues.
  • Maintain and calibrate fiber optic splicing and testing equipment. Report any equipment malfunctions or issues to the supervisor and assist with repairs as needed.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues related to fiber optic connectivity and performance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or associate degree in telecommunications or related field preferred.
  • Proven experience in fiber optic splicing and network installation with a deep understanding of fiber types, connectors and cable structures.
  • Indepth understanding of OSP fiber design and splicing construction practices, materials, and equipment.
  • Understand FTTH design using XGSPON, GPON, AE, OLT and ONT technologies.
  • Proficient in fiber optic splicing techniques (fusion and mechanical), cable handling, and using specialized tools like OTDRs, fiber optic test sets, and splicing machines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex network issues and identify root causes of signal degradation.
  • Maintain high standards of precision when splicing fibers to minimize signal loss.
  • Ability to interpret and generate technical documentation, including splice logs, test reports, and network diagrams
  • Working knowledge using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills
  • Bilingual in both English and Spanish is highly preferred
  • Extremely versatile, dedicated to efficient productivity
  • Ability to read and interpret fiber optic schematics and technical specifications.
  • Excellent problemsolving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to delivering highquality work.
  • Certifications: Relevant industry certifications (e.g., BICSI, Fiber Optic Association (FOA)) are a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to carry and use tools and equipment
  • Requisite ability to drive motor vehicle
  • Adequate ability to distinguish different colors of fiber
  • Ability to frequently bend, stoop and crawl
  • Ability to lift and carry 28ft extension ladder
  • Occasionally sit and climb ladders/stairs; perform fine motor and pinching movements, & pivots with feet and bends, twists and laterally flexes back & reaches at overhead shoulder, knee, and floor levels, stoops, squats, crouches, kneels and crawls and press foot pedals.
  • Frequently stands and walks & pushes/pulls with arms and grasps with hands & reaches at waist
  • Ability to climb ladders and/or utility poles and work in high places
  • Ability to work in small spaces, tolerate typical residential and commercial controlled work environments as well as uncontrolled weatherrelated heat and cold for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work outdoors and in extreme weather conditions and varying topographic, wet and dry locations
  • May require working outside regular business hours to address urgent service delivery issues
