Position Description:
The Locator Technician is responsible for accurately identifying and protecting Lyte Fiber’s company assets to prevent damage during excavation activities. This role involves using various tools and software to locate fiber optic cables, ensuring that dig sites are clear of conflicts, and maintain detailed records of utility locations and operations. The idea candidate will have prior experience in utility locating. This role involves oversight and coordination of locate ticket requests, ensuring accurate and timely completion.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Accurately identify and locate Lyte Fiber assets to prevent damage during excavation.
- Use software tools to perform daily operations related to protecting the fiber plant.
- Maintain tools, test sets, and electronic equipment to ensure accuracy of locate operations.
- Mark all utility locations with paint and capture photos for company records.
- Ensure Lyte Fiber’s standard and emergency locates are completed during regular, after and holiday hours.
- Update site records and log information on trouble tickets for reference.
- Utilizes the geographic information system (GIS), the asset management system and asbuilt plans to research and provide infrastructure locations.
- Be proficient with the State’s 811 locate system including the county and city utility ticking systems.
- Prepares reports, simple drawings and sketches and submits to GIS staff for any new construction or changes.
- Ensure all utility locates comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and community and company policies.
- Investigate and document damages to Lyte Fiber’s underground infrastructure, determining responsibility and coordinating with leadership for claims.
- Develop relationships with other utility owners in the market.
- Performs all work in a timely, professional and efficient manner while effectively communicating and interacting with residents, coemployees and third parties.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or associate degree in telecommunications or related field preferred.
- 1year minimum utility locate experience.
- Familiar with 811 ticketing system, city and county procedures for locating.
- Knowledgeable in the operations of test equipment to verify cable faults.
- Familiarity with GIS mapping systems and ability to read maps, cable plats and schematics.
- Ability to Work with Google Earth KMZ’s and KML’s.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction plans, blueprints, and technical specifications.
- Ability to be versatile and dedicated to efficient production.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
- Standing and Walking: Frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Bending and Stooping: Regularly need to bend, stoop, and crouch to access various locations.
- Physically able to climb utility poles using pole climbers.
- Lifting and Carrying: Occasionally lift and carry equipment or materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Manual Dexterity: Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Visual Acuity: Must have good vision to read maps, plans, and locate markings.
- Driving: Required to drive to different job sites, sometimes over long distances.
